This. 100%

Lazy parents want other people to raise their kids and then complain that they don’t do it right.

Schools have abandoned phonics and other effective approaches for “whole language” and other trendy theories, producing a population where 60% of 4th graders are poor readers. "The biggest losers are the students, particularly minorities. According to the latest California testing results, only 36% of Latino students met or exceeded state adopted ELA proficiency. Only 22% met or exceeded proficiency standards in math. The harsh reality is that nearly 70% of black students failed to meet state standards for english language arts in the 2021-2022 school year, while about 84% didn’t meet math standards."

My 15 year old wasn't aware of who Earnest Hemingway is. He can read Cursive and can't tell time on a standard clock.....

Retired high school teacher/coach. Unfortunately both the state and feds have really screwed things up. A way bigger issue than the feds is our own state government and having to teach so kids can pass the STAR test! I never got to really get into the history that I felt was important. Schools also get dinged now for their dropout rate. Some kids just don’t want to be there and don’t do anything, they are just waiting to turn 18 and drop out.
Ways to run schools if I was the education czar.
1. No phones in school period
2. Get rid of mandated tests
3. Have uniformed strict dress codes, you would be shocked at how much that helps. NEVER give any choices.
4. Let those who refuse to be educated just leave.
5. Find the funds to teach multiple trades, not everyone can afford college or care about going.
6. Empathy, empathy, empathy. If you teach in a school that especially has a high degree of poverty teach the teachers to understand that there are reasons at home that hinder learning.
Now about esl kids not being as proficient as the government wants. At my school we had 8+ languages with a lot of them coming and going.
Lord I could go on and on

I agree with everyone except T bird. Holding teachers accountable for their students success is the entire problem! You have 35 kids in every class. Half of them have zero interest in being there. You try to encourage each kid to learn but some just don’t care. Why in the world should a teacher be accountable for a 16 year olds test scores. Calling the parents is a joke. 90% of the contact information is wrong. It is not the teachers responsibility to parent the kids even though most all of the teachers try, he#@ we want them to succeed more than anyone. Oh, about the school contracting the parents about their children’s gender identity? It is not the school’s responsibility. Should I have to inform a parent when their kid confines in me that they are gay? They wanted to tell an adult and I never judged them. I listened and assured them I would cared about them and was there if they wanted to talk. The only thing that a teacher needs to inform anyone about is if a student wanted to hurt themselves. Then you tell the counselor and the administrators

KQT...what you posted is part of the reason I have thought that, in the summer, between their Jr & Sr year it should be mandatory they go through a generic, modified version of boot camp, minus shooting. If they fail they have to go back. Without going through the program you do not get any sort of welfare or other gov't benefits (scholarships and maybe one or two other things) unless you are proven physically or really mentally unfit to serve. What most of the "losers" (I don't use that word with prejudice) lack is discipline. JMO.

I could not agree more. How it would work would take some tweaking. By the time some of the kids get that age they already have a kid. Being generous, about 20% at most of my athletes and students came from two parent homes.

Lots of 20- something’s don’t even know who MLK is. Kids have been radicalized for the last 30+ years, its been their goal.

Many times I have stated that our allowing schools in minority communities to be poorly funded, staffed with our lesser accomplished educators, and devoid of any semblance of discipline will go down as government racism of the worst order. As long as we continue to expect so little of these schools....that's exactly what we will get.

Simply stated, this is child abuse...and state/local government is the abuser.

School should be a privilege. Bad parents = bad kids. Bad behaving kids make it impossible for other kids to learn. If you can’t behave, kick them out. Do away with welfare and make it hard on people who don’t have an education.

That’s all that will fix the problem. Throwing more money at it won’t fix anything.

Bass n buck master. I am not sure what your definition of radicalization is but I would assume if that a kid was being radicalized they would absolutely know who MLK is. Honestly any 20 year old who doesn’t know who MLK is must have a serious learning disability, lots and lots of exposure to MLK from kindergarten to senior. I think I know what you meant, just possibly the wrong example.

Same with our house and our 3 kids. Thankfully we passed this along to both or our boys and they are working with their kids like we did.
My wife was a teacher and she did the reading/writing part and I did the mathematics part.
After supper (which we all ate together at the table) I would grade their math work and explain how to work the problems they missed. With the twins, we requested that they have the same teachers (switch classes) so we only had to check one set of papers for both of them.
All three of them graduated in the top 10% of there class, with at least one of them in the top 5%.

As someone who has been in the trenches one of the issues IMO is the cultural world these kids consume. Think about the kind of music we listened to in the 60’s and 70’s. Most of the music was about love and happiness. Sure anti establishment music existed and we liked it but the majority of Motown, rock, country, and soul were harmless.
RAP on the other hand……
