I think I posted something about this a while back but thought I’d throw it out again. If you have trouble keeping bait (any bait) on your hook (especially chicken livers) they make a product that will solve that problem. It’s elastic fishing thread. You make several wraps around whatever re using and it’s hard for a fish to get it off. You can often catch 2 or 3 fish on the same chicken liver bait. It works great on dough bait…especially for carp and buffalo. I use it if I’m fishing with Danny King punch bait. You can catch a half dozen on the same bait. I get it from Amazon in a package that has 2 rolls and a dispenser. That’s over 1,300’ of thread. Since you use no more than a foot at a time, it lasts a while! I started using it because there are more yellow bass in Eagle Mountain than there are stars in the universe and they are expert bait thieves. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2025/01/full-20037-256318-img_3737.jpeg)

Been using the cheapest dollar store thread for years, works pretty good. If you could come up with a less messy way to handle chicken livers........

Hmm. I never thought about looking for it elsewhere. Good idea. Chicken livers are too nasty for me to use since I don’t keep any fish. I puréed some livers once and mixed it up with Wheaties to make a dough bait for buffalo and that wasn’t too nasty. I caught some pretty big (15-18 lb) buffalo on it but usually the catfish wouldn’t leave it alone long enough.

I use guaze pads with chicken livers, and just curious. How do you use the thread with punch bait? That'd be like nailing jello to a tree.

Punch bait has enough cotton or cattail fluff to make it stay on a treble hook fairly well. If you wrap it, it’s not coming off without a fight. In fact, I’ve put Danny Kings bait on a #6 single hook, wrapped it, and let kids fish with it. You can wrap fresh chicken liver on a single hook, drop it on the deck, and it will bounce a little. I went back and found my original post on it. I was killing time catching yellow bass (they’ll eat anything) when a big school of 12”-15” blue cats moved in. I caught them suspended at 7’-8’ in 25’ of water till I got tired of messing with them right under my boat. This is the pic from that post. I was using punch bait on a #6 single hook wrapped with that thread. When I took this pic, I had caught 17 catfish (mostly small) on the previous bait just as fast as I could drop it. I put this bait on and decided that was enough for one day. If someone else told me that I’d raise an eyebrow but it’s the truth. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2025/01/full-20037-256384-img_3745.jpeg)

Ahhh! I had my baits confused. That makes sense now. Thanks for clarifying! (There's a master baiter joke here somewhere but I'm not going there)

The synthetic fuzz that comes in dog toys helps greatly in holding punch bait. Never hurts to put a little peanut butter in the punch bait to get the best sticky and texture.

Neat idea. I will say that I don't have any problem keeping punch bait on a size 4 or even a size 6 treble hook, but then again that's not chicken liver.

Yeah, it usually stays on a treble pretty well. I just don’t like fishing with treble hooks. They’re entirely too hard to get out of a fish’s mouth that I’m going to release anyway.
