Used red food coloring on turkey livers and cut chicken breasts.

No. I have used strawberry jello and it works.
Saw a video on You Tube (of course) where a guy spent a long period of time (two seasons I think?) fishing raw chicken breast for cats. One with the jello powder applied for 24 hours prior, and the other just fresh breast without the powder. The Jello breast caught 65% of the fish fished side by side, over a long period.
So seems there is something to it.

HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!

So seems there is something to it. There are a lot of variables involved in the chicken bait. On the lake I fish, I never caught a fish over a pound and a half on it. Fished side by side with shad, the chicken caught 0% of the fish. Other lakes and times are different I imagine but that’s my experience.

I have done great with chicken at Grapevine and Texoma. For bigger fish as well. Both of these came on chicken breast just last week. Had one over 20lb that I released. Pure guess but on Texoma and Grapevine I have found many huge mussels. And I have found mussels in the stomachs of cats of all sizes. I think maybe the chicken somehow has a similarity to those mussels? Not sure. Guess it does not matter why it works just that it does.

Shad with me catches nothing.
As for the red color, Tru-Turn released a study, whether by them or someone else (I'd have to go back on U-6 to find it).. They found that red hooks & such seemed to catch more fish. So they concluded that the "red" may be that as they look up & see red it is related a the red gills flaring & rush to get it thinking a smaller fish is above them. Dave, who has used to soak either chicken breast or Bar S wieners in Dead Red & run juglines at a lake up in north Texas, as well as one up in Oklahoma had tremendous. He would bait out in the evening, and retrieve fish & jugs the next morning. One time, he & his fishing partner caught so much, they had the ice chest so heavy, they had to build a ramp to get it off the truck once they got back home. Dave used my Catfish Calendar to the max, including Bleedover, which is one of my tips in the KEY.

Years ago, WillieRip on here had a video where he used pool salt on chicken chunks. Put everything in a sealed container the night before a trip.

I don’t understand why folks don’t just use Shad. It’s the best bait you’ll find for channels and blues. Heck, I find live minnows extremely effective during the channel cat spawn.

Not everyone has the ability or desire to use a cast net for shad.

Keep a package of Berkley Gulp baits and #8 hooks handy. Cut off a piece of the BG for bait. A split shot sinker will get it down. Bluegill will eat those BG's as well as using a worm or piece of whole corn.

I for sure throw a net for shad and gills. Its not easy to get them in the winter from the bank though... and throwing a net from a kayak is just not something I do. Too top heavy bub lol

I fish for big blues in shallow water February-April, and also anytime the creeks or rivers flood after a big rain where they dump into the main lake. I primarily fish with chicken breast, sometimes soaked in red koolaid, and sometimes just chicken soaked in garlic. My largest fish is 60lbs and regularly catch fish from 10-50lbs, don’t catch many small fish due to using 10/0 hooks but they bite it too. I have fished chicken along side of fresh shad, sometimes one catch’s more than the other but it’s easy to get. Like others, I want my time spent on the water fishing for big fish, not trying to catch shad.

The main reason I use shad is that it’s free after you buy the net but it isn’t always the “best” bait. It depends on the size fish you’re after and the size of your bait. My target shad are 4”-6” long. I’ll get two baits out of one and use a 10/0 circle hook. I’ve been fishing for over 6 decades and have caught all the small fish I want. If I were fishing for food, I’d be using chicken livers, worms, stink bait, etc.

Like others have mentioned, I try to throw a cast net to catch my bait. If a lake's primary forage for cats is shad and bluegill, I do my best to catch those. There are certainly times and certain lakes I just can't consistently catch bait. Ray Roberts for example, I can cast a net all day long from the banks and barely catch 5-10 fish for bait. So if I know I am going to fish that lake I will run by 99 Ranch Market and pick out a buffalo and have them scale and gut it for me. I will still try the net, but will at least have a back up plan.
I have never used chicken breast, liver, worms or stink bait for bait.
