I received a 2025 vehicle registration renewal notice in mail today.
While looking over the changes expecting to see the new Inspection Replacement Fee (TAX) of $7.50 I was surprised to see $16.75. This is on a 2 year old vehicle already registered in Texas, so this isn't the first registration.
I was going to renew online, but I will do this in person since the fee Replacement Fee is over double what it should be and they have me listed in the wrong county.
Has anyone else received a 2025 renewal that can look at theirs and let me know white dollar amount for the IRF. TIA

I just bought a new 2024 Vehicle last Wednesday. I looked at the Settlement sheet and I paid $7.50 inspection fee. It may depend on the county your are in.

I was actually surprised to see that I paid a $7.50 inspection fee since as you said, the inspections are supposedly not required in 2025.

Haven't received a renewal for any of my motor vehicles yet, but I did just receive my renewal for my boat trailer and see that they tacked on a $7.50 "Inspection Replacement Fee", even though the trailer never has required an inspection (Gross Weight 3000 lbs). Are they tacking this fee on to every tag renewal?

But the emissions test is still needed in the cities.

In my county it is 7.50 with no inspection (diesel)....the car will be emission tested so not sure of the actual cost for that vehicle. The state got it backwards IMO. We should be safety inspecting and looking for things that are safety items like tires, brakes, lights etc...I don't see any accidents' because of a check engine light.

If you have a military plate (MSM, LOM, PURPLE HEART, DV,etc) it stays at $7.50. I asked the lady at the dmv about boat trailers and she said if it didn’t need an inspection before, there will be no extra fees. Her words not mine.

Oh. This was Titus county I think and the vehicle will be registered in Wood county. I am starting to think that the Inspections themselves are no longer required, but the fee is. You don't need the inspection but you still have to pay for it. grin

I went and got my new window sticker and found out why it was showing $16.75 instead of $7.50. The dealership put Harrison County on the paperwork like it was supposed to be, but the person at the state office put it in Gregg County since I have a Longview address but am just across the county line.
The lady at the sub courthouse said she sees it all the time and no big deal. She typed some stuff into her computer and it dropped back to $7.50 and my road and bridge tax goes to the correct place now.

I still don't know why the inspection only cost $7.00 but the (you didn't get an inspection) fee is $7.50. Just another Texas Government Tax that got passed by some back door dealings.

As a reminder, as of Jan. 1, 2025, non-commercial vehicles no longer need a vehicle safety inspection prior to registration. All non-commercial vehicles in the state are still subject to a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee per HB 3297.

New vehicles (those of the current or preceding model year on the date of purchase) purchased in Texas that have not been previously registered in Texas or another state are required to pay an initial inspection program replacement fee of $16.75 to cover two years.
