If your upper oil tank is full, I would say that the float sensor is bad. I replaced one on an XR4 once.

4 things could be the problem up on pad. Oil module, Motion sensor, Stripped oil gear, losing fire on cylinder#3...OPTI

I really appreciate the info. The engine is running rough as well as this alarm coming on. I pulled NGK plugs out and put in Champions and the motor is running rough and now the oil alarm.

My XR4 had a sensor that slid up and down inside the upper oil reservior. It was attached to the cap. It went bad and wasnt working. If plugs were the only change you made, put the old ones or new NGK's back in to see if it stops.

I had an XR4 with the same problem. Had a cracked lid on the oil reservoir in the engine. Every now and then it would go off, because it got a little low. Not unsafe. Mechanic said to open up cowling and add oil to the oil reservoir. Mine would then stop.

You dont wanna run champions in a Mercury,I know the auto stores will tell you cross reference but only run ngk,s in a Mercury. And make sure they are gapped right.

Cajun, you may have a switchbox going out. I've had the same problem, and I've seen it on others, also. Usually, the switchbox just quits and you lose one bank of cylinders, but I have also seen one cylinder lose fire. Have you lost about 500 or so rpm. If you can't find the problem, send me a pm. I have a DVA, and I can check the voltage to the coils. It only takes a few minutes at the ramp.

Put the NGK BU8H plugs back in (surface gap plugs) no gapping. Check the screen on the oil pickup tube in the main oil tank plus what Opti said. Had a boat that the oil alarm would come on when you hit a boat wake, found the main tank setting on top of the oil lines HU. Red you do not want to run with a cracked cap, it will leak a bunch of oil into the lake plus you will not be getting enough oil to the motor at full throttle and will suddenly go boom. Do`nt know how many blown motors I have seen that they said the alarm would come on some times. Good Luck
