I've had a 1000lb capacity homemade utility trailer for fourteen years in Collin County.

I used to receive a renewal slip every year in January. Did not receive one this year....and don't think I did last year either.

I called the Tax office and they said those are courtesy reminders and may not be sent anymore....this sounds incredibly dumb.....especially for homemade utility trailers as you are unable to pay those online as they don't have a VIN.

I was instructed to just write a letter and send a check....this sounds like going back in time to 1950.....which I'm fine with, but I know law enforcement isn't so willy nilly about annual trailer registration as the County Tax office appears to be.

Anyone else to confirm or comment?

Thank you.

I'm glad that they are saving money by not sending out mailers.
I would gladly trade that for an email or text message to give me time to renew.
They should be able to do that for almost no cost.

They are not sending emails or text messages as a reminder.
It's 100% on the homemade utility trailer owner to remember to just write them a letter 30 days prior to the renewal date.

For my boat trailer, they have continued to send the annual letter.....but because that has a VIN, I added that trailer to my online account.

I believe if the trailer has a certain capacity +/- braking system they will do an initial inspection on initial registration....I wouldn't think that would be annual; could be wrong though.

A friend of mine says it is bad luck if your trailer tags are up to date and the lights work... grin

I called to ask that question…it was the same amount as when they last sent the reminder letter in 2022…..which I had in my files.

When i renewed my camper last year it said if it weighs over 7000 pounds i had to have it inspected. Mine only weighed 6,500 so no inspection for me. I don't know if that changed for trailers over 7000 or not.

If you register your vehicle (car-truck) you have an option to choose mail or e-mail. At least that the way it was the last time I did on line

Yes, if the vehicle/camper/trailer has a VIN; you can do everything online and you get email notifications.
I think the state sort of forgot about homemade utility trailers in this transition.

I’m wanting to find out about this too. As of January 2025, there’s a new trailer inspection form, I assume is submitted for trailers over 7,500 pounds

TX Trailer Self Certification Form

I haven’t been able find anything other information regarding new 2025 law for registering 7,500+ trailers.

Mine doesn’t expire until September.

Jimmy.

Our tax office is a little office in town. I just take a picture of the license plate, and take to the office. " I want to renew this license." Write a check, all done.

One of the advantages of living outside of the Metromess.
