I recently purchased a 520c and was reading through the instructions. I intended on mounting the transducer externally on the back of the boat until I looked at Triton's web site and they recommend against it. Further, there is no good place to mount it on the back of my TR186. I'm frustrated and starting thinking about having someone do it for me. I'd love to do it myself but I don't want to mess up the unit or go crazy in the process. Does anyone know where I can get this installed? Is it easier than I am making it out to be and should I give it a try myself? Thanks.

any boat dealer could do it..If your close (well you don't really have to be close) to Rockwall, Tommy Yetts at Rockwall Marine-- 2315 Hwy 276 Rockwall, TX (972) 771-4442- is one to check..If you do it your self, try to get some double stick velcro and try several places before you cut a hole in the boat..not really a hard job, some just HATE cutting into their boat..( thats why I got the internal antenna with mine)

They really aren't hard to install. You have to find a good place to mount the transducer and grind out the top layer of fiberglass to the point where you get a good clean surface. Then you rough up the transducer with some sand paper, clean both surfaces and glue it down.
As for the antenna, clear silicone will stick it down where you want it.

Look this up on the BBC board and also on the lowrance website - there's lots of tricks / tips to this - too many to list here. Hardest part for me was running the cables through the gunwale - Rangers are difficult for this. Allow yourself a few hours and you'll be ok - but to me it's definitely worth getting "professional" help on something like this. Brent's marine electronics in Benbrook (far away from you ) is who I prefer.

I called the folks over at Rockwall Marine and they are going to fit me in tomorrow morning. Thanks for the advice. I think I'd rather pay someone else to correctly install this fine piece of machinery than screw it up myself. Thanks guys.
McCluod, they said they could do it in 1.5 hrs. Just goes to show you that sometimes it's better to just get it done than struggle with it. Good luck with your unit.

Heck, I have spent a lot more than 1 and 1/2 hours just on the phone trying to get this thing working! Another 2+ hrs. on the net, then 15 to 20 man hours on installation and trouble shooting and mine still does not work!

Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.

Got the boat back yesterday and the folks over at Rockwall Marine did a great job. They had it done when they said they would have it done, it looks great, and they charged me the price they quoted me. No hidden costs. I will go back there again for any future boating needs. Tommy and his crew have a great thing going over there.
