From now thru the spawn. I've had fish on a bed that would not bite any type of soft plastic that would eat a suspending jerk bait readily. I like a 6-8 medium rod with 15# Flo on a 7:1 reel. For the bait I like a ghost minnow color, something natural with translucent sides KInda like this one

Where to fish the jerkbaits is my question. Maybe THE question, as most jerks don’t get down deeper than 8-10ft. Don’t we fish deep this time of year?

Collindave, I like to fish jerkbaits on windy days along creek channels that lead into spawning flats, preferably over or near grass.

That being said you can go.out and catch fish in 1' of water right now. Even when it's colder. It's been a VERY mild fall and early winter as well. Not all fish go deep in winter. My setup is usually: Megabass Destroyer Destroyer P5 Oneten Special rod Daiwa Tatula SV150H reel Sunline Super Flourocarbon 10lb Megabass Vision 110 variant based on conditions with mat shad being my color preference I keep one tied on year round.

I fish with the following...yes this is going to sound like an informercial.
Daiwa Tatula Elite Patrick Walters 6' 10" M Jerk bait rod Megabass 110 or 110 Jr (3-5') Megabass 110 or 110 Jr +1 (6-8')
These have been the best producers during the fall / winter / early spring for me.

The MB 110+2 will hit 12' on 12# Flo. It's rare when you need one to go deeper than that even in 25' of water. Most of the time the fish will be suspended next to trees about 10-12' down

I throw mine on a 7 foot medium heavy fast action rod with a 7:1 reel. 12 lb Sunline Sniper. I also stay away from all of those ridiculously overpriced jerkbaits. The Academy brand ones will work just as good at a fraction of the price. Check out the link below. My favorite color happens to be Threadfin Shad. Also, I have more luck fishing the suspending jerkbait in 10 feet of water, or less. The colder the water, the longer the pause should be. Good luck!

Good info. To me your to be successful with a jerkbait is picking the day to go. I usually have the better days when you have a sunny warm day or days in the middle of cold days. The bass will pull up on black rocks or treetops to "sun". that is where you find fish in treetops on breaks of river channels, roadbeds or back of deep pockets out of the wind but gets full sun. It maybe 30 feet deep and trees top out 10 feet deep. Fish will pull up and lay it the top. They will usually smash a jerkbait. They don't hit a jerkbait every day, it's like everything else. It's a tool in your toolbox. use it when the conditions require it.
