What used to be called number sense is apparently a dying ability. I just bought a sandwich and the total was $10.41. I gave the kid $21 because I wanted $10 in change. I even said, "Okay, take it out of $21."

I see him set the $1 to the side and start pulling $1s out of the register with a $5. I asked him if I could have another $5; instead of the ones. I said, "That's why I gave you $21". He looked like he was about to have a nervous breakdown. His cash register tells him how much change to return and he still couldn't do it.

Then he said, "That's too bad. I already punched in $20."

"That's too bad"?

He proceeded to hand me a $5 and five $1s. I just took what he gave me, not daring to hand the ones back and ask for a $5.

What has happed to you does not define who you are-

HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!

I did something similar. Total was $12.50. I had tons of ones. Gave him a $20, two dollars and two 2 quarters. He thought I was going to just hand him $20 so that’s what he entered into the register. He just looked at the register not knowing what to do. I said “just give me $10 back, I gave you $10 more than the bill.” He said “I don’t think that’s right”. After I few seconds trying to explain it I told him to “give me the dollars and quarters back and give me the change the register says”.Then I gave him the money back saying “can I get a $10 for this”. He counted it and said “sure, I need change ”. I asked him do you realize something?” He said, “no”.

He will probably make millions with a YouTube channel.

I did a similar thing last year at Whataburger. The young lady pulled out her cellphone and used the calculator. Smdh

It’s funny to me when you buy something for, say $12.45 and pay with a $20. The girl says “your change is seven and 55.”

I just chuckle and move on.

Hey, at least there was someone working and somewhat friendly from what you've described. However, I do remember on the applications to work at Subway you had to correctly answer math questions about correct change and counting down your drawer before you could even get the interview.

55c makes 13...14,15 and 5 is 20
So difficult for these kids. I'm 50 and learned it at my first job. Required to count change back. And at the farm store the ol farmers would toss odd ball change and bills so they could get back certain bills and coins to avoid pennys nickles and dimes. They messed with us but helped teach us too. Man...I sure miss small towns.

I was in WalMart the other day and paid cash. I think the young guy was new, but I was owed 63 cents. He took quite a while figuring it out. I almost said if you look at the screen that we both can see you would know what you owe me. But I was in no hurry.
