So I decided to make a trip to Flag Pole Hill near Lawther Dr. I fished for about 2 hours trying different spots north and south of the bridge and nothing. The water seemed lifeless, in the past I used to catch limits near the bend. Has something changed I am not aware of yet. Any input would be wonderful.

What I find the most interesting is that the 2023 gill net survey still indicates there is still a healthy and abundant white crappie population. Was wondering if anyone has any suggests on the lake side, I have pedal kayak. Thank you.

I have seen very little action on crappie there in the last 10 years. That said I have not fished it much in the last two years...

Caught a few sandies last time I was there. That was encouraging because they had all but disappeared for about 10 years there due to netting in the creek in winter.

Interested to hear others thoughts on crappie and just the lake in general.

Things have not been the same since the dredged the lake. Winter crappie fishing use to be popping at White Rock.

Construction on northwest highway silted in the creek, too shallow for fish to want to run up. Generally crappie won’t cross long stretches of shallow water like the sandies will.

2cents In years past after Thanksgiving around the first Frost or a Good Flooding Rain would cause the shad migration.Once the migration took place you knew what happened next.

100% correct. When they raised the Highway they also blocked the flow of the creek and used big pipes to pump the water around the construction area. The winter creek fishing has never been the same since. From Thanksgiving to New Year's I used to be able to catch a limit or close to it almost every trip. We were way back in the woods, sometime alone, sometimes the banks would be lined with fisherman, with everyone catching crappie. It was something I waited for and looked forward to every year. Since the construction, I've gone back every year once or twice, but have never had much luck. None of my old spots seem to produce fish. I am pretty sure it's not just me. The trails that used to take you deep in the woods are all grown in, not many people back there, at least not fishermen. 99% of the time I fished north of flagpole hill up to skillman. Maybe the patterns have changed and I just have not found them, but I really think the pattern changed to they just mostly stay in the lake. Crappie fishing in the lake this time of year can be excellent. I fish from a kayak. Look for visible structure. It's all in the upper end of the lake. You can try fishing the pylons under the Mockingbird bridge. Another really good spot is the barrier dock for the Dallas Sailing Club. Be respectful, and don't climb on or tie up to their dock. With a kayak, its easy to scoot along dropping a jig or minnow next to each post. You can do the same thing at the Corinthian. I have never had much success fishing the deeper water. I may catch one here and there, but there is virtually no deep water structure to hold fish. I fish the lake mostly from Dec-May from a kayak, and catch a lot of crappie. Almost all of my fish are caught in less then 6 feet of water, usually with a jig, with or without a small cork bobber. PRO TIP: Fish late afternoon, and stay for a couple hours after dark, especially during a full moon. The bite will die down at dusk, but pick back up about 30 minutes after dark. Just like we used to in the creek, jig and bobber with a mini glow stick stuck in the bobber.

About 10 years ago that creek was full of crappie, sandbass, and yellow bass in the winter time. While I must admit I have never been a huge fan of winter creek crappie fishing because of their finicky nature, the fish were certainly there. I’m sure some fish do still go up the creek in the winter, but I haven’t heard it being anything like it used to be.

Appreciate everyone's input. Thank you very much guys. As a side note, City of Dallas recently approved Prop B which includes the dredging of White Rock Lake at an estimated cost of 20 million.

Thank you sir. I always regarded you as a White Rock Lake expert and wondered what it was like to fish the boat docks at the lake. I never ever see them being fished.

I took my own advice. Nearly a full moon, fished from 6-8pm, main lake 6 feet of water. jig and bobber.

Fishbonz you are killing them, your handler should be CrappieKing. I heard you cannot eat them from White Rock lake, wonder if this is true.
