I had my Yahaha 115hp 2 stroke rebuilt 4 years ago. Paid over $5k at a very reputable shop. It's blown again and I'm looking for a new motor. Can't say that $5k was worth getting 4 more years out of it. Now I wish I had just gotten a new motor. What a waste...

Just my opinion. Just thought I would post what I wish I had read when it blew the first time. Let it go. Get a new one with an actual warranty. A rebuilt piece of junk is still a piece of junk, let it die and move on.

My buddy paid his shop $6k to rebuild his 200 EFI, it was used maybe 8 times in 2 years and blew again. Shop said, “ sorry, 1 year warranty”. What a joke, this time he’s having to drop almost $20k for a new one. You’re right, bite the bullet and pay the $$$ or just piss away on rebuilt.

It's a dilemma for sure. It really depends on the machine work and exactly what they're replacing. If the cylinders aren't honed good, or they use old bearings it is going to live a short and painful life. And to aggravate the problem, we're running ethanol fuel through motors that were never designed to run mooshine gas.

And sometimes, you wish rebuild was a choice, I just took apart my motor thinking a lower gasket was compromised, and needed replacing. On this F150 that's not a small job to get to the point to pull the powerhead off and find THIS. Big ol' hole in the block. Sheezoids. I don't think JB weld will patch this cancer up.

I had a 2 stroke 2002 Yamaha 90 rebuilt out of necessity several years ago. I did so because for the boat I owned, I needed the lightest motor out there. Unfortunately, there still isn't a lighter 90hp motor than that old Yamaha 2 stroke. She served me well for the next 4 years after that rebuild.

That being said, I was never that impressed with the rebuild quality and was always worried about it popping again. The folks that rebuilt it, went out of business. I was a happy camper when I sold that time bomb.

Was in the exact same position when my 90 popped on the scooter, you couldn't put anything heavier or it would sink. Got lucky and found a commercial 90 with a blown lower unit, that motor is stupid simple and it's still running hard.

In the same dilemma right now, this shallow sport ain't happy with the big pig four stroke, it's *OK* but not optimum. Right now I'm 90% sure I'm heading to Tampico to get a 150 two stroke and rig it up. I'll take my chances with a warranty that hopefully won't ever use.

Yeah Pat, I had the 16' Scandy White Open Pro Tunnel and there was no way I would stick anything heavier than that old 2 stroke Yamaha on it. My rig sat level with me and a full load on it. I saw pictures of some of the newer 16' Scandy's with modern 90's on 'em and they squatted really badly. I was always able to get up in water I could float in. Seems the heavier motors just defeated the purpose of owning a Scandy.

Sadly, some were putting 60's on them to address the additional weight issue. I couldn't imagine running that rig with 30 less horses.

That Scandy White is a boss rig for sure. Stupid feds fixing problems that don't exist.

Pat, I'd move quick on that Tampico purchase, before the new, re-cycled President does something next month to totally scrap the NAFTA trade agreement. Assuming that Japanese-made motors coming via Mexico are now duty-exempt? I guess you could go there by boat, and hopefully miss all the bureaucracy? Good luck! Jim

There’s some duty on it now, about $800 from what I calculated. A 150C motor is about seven grand given todays exchange rate. So all in on a new in crate motor that’s way ahead of the options. Gotta take the old beast truck to not look like a target.

My Yamaha HPDI has been rebuilt twice. The first time lasted 14 years and the second is on year 4. It costs $31,000 to replace this engine installed. Sometimes rebuilding is the correct course.
