With the yellow bass population booming at Benbrook and everyone releasing them--I am wondering if this will eventually be a problem(maybe sooner than later) and if there are any fish that eat yellow bass?!?

I've wondered the same thing about Arlington. I believe the bigger largemouth will eat them. Not sure about what else. Maybe yellow cats.

the LMB will eat them and it will help benbrook become alot better bass fishery. out east, yellow bass (or bar fish as i call em) are the primary source of food for black bass 2-3 pounds and up. they also taste pretty dang good, great fish sticks smile

Do you think hybrids will eat them?

I think it's an unwrittten rule that where there are yellow bass, look closely for hybrids who will be feisting on the smallish barr fish.

Man that is what I would think or at least they would both be in the same area because they both eat shad--but on BB if we are catching hybrids and then start catching yellows it means the hybrids are gone == at least that is what I have found. From all of the ones I had to take off my slab today, it looks like Ive been jugling machetes--those little suckers got SHARP gill plates and spiked fins!

benbrook has several 8-9 inchers, which are perfect for eating. i dont know if the hybrids will eat them, but here is some food for thought. while fishing the south end for bass thursday, i caught about a 5-6 lb hybrid on a plastic lizard. i also hear that back in march people where catching hybrids at the new water discharge off the bottom with night crawlers.

Whatever you do, don't use yellow bass as live bait. Ticket for sure from the GW!!

Or as cut bait for that matter. That is a shame though as they make awesome cut bait. As many as there are and not classified as a game fish, I have always wondered why they can't be used for bait. Anyone know?

Jason,
They attack those 1 oz and bigger slabs at BB, don't they!! To keep the cuts to your hands down, try grabbing em around the head just forward of the gill plates - - seems to result in alot less spearings.

Isn't there no limit on size/quantity on yellow bass?

No limit or size limits. Keep as many at any size as you want. The meat is firm and the llittle 5 inchers will fillet up just fine. smile However they are classified as a gamefish since they are a bass.

yeah but you have to fillet 75 of them for 1 person--I may actually try to keep some next time.
