Side Note: I am still seeing jars of the Berkley Trout Baits on sale at Academy and Bass Pro Shop. Bass Pro seems to have a nice supply of Super Duper Lures but they sell out fast. I have not seen any Super Dupers at the local Academy's in my area. I have had good luck ordering them on line. I will be following this thread for sure.

The quality of fish last stocking season was very good. Hopefully it's the same if not better!

Stocking season starts this week! Go get em!

The season begins.( Two angler limit). Gold Super Duper Lure and Berkley Power Bait- Yellow in color! Bite was very slow. Had to work hard. Blanco River.

Limited out on the Blanco River this past Saturday. Yellow power bait. Also the trout stockings start on the Guadalupe River this Friday.

Double Limit Sunday, with my buddy Steve. Blanco River. Yellow Power Bait.

Live Oak Stalking! First of three.


Side Note: Limit. Bite was slow. Caught 3 on the Gold Super Duper and two on Berkley Trout Bait-Yellow in color. Had two got offs on the Super Duper. It was great seeing the regulars and swapping some fish stories.

Stockdale Stocking.

Me and my wife fished Stockdale City Pond and the bite was good. We fished the day after the stocking. My wife caught her very first Rainbow Trout. We both limited out and took 10 along with a Channel Catfish, home for the frying pan. Could not get them to hit the Super Duper. The Berkley Power Bait-Yellow got the job done. Great being in the outdoors and catching some Rainbow Trout.

Blanco River, Canyon Trail Race, Stockdale City Pond.


Fished all of the above. Blanco still holding a lot of fish. Limited out in three hours. Berkley Trout Bait- Yellow/Orange. Canyon Trail Race. Fished the day after the stocking. Limited out in 45 minutes. Catch & Release for another three hours and caught about 30 trout. Gold Super Duper got the job done. Stock Dale Pond. First time I have fished there. Me and a friend limited out in 2 hours. Fished two days after the stocking. Trout Bait- Yellow was used.

Side Note: Breaking out the flyrod this upcoming week.


PSA. Dicks Sporting Goods has plenty of the Berkley Trout Bait in various colors in stock. Also Bass Pro Shop- San Antonio has some Gold and Silver 502 Super Dupers in stock, however they still sell out quickly.

South Llano River State Park.

Me and my Friend Dale fished the South Llano River State Park. Dale fished yesterday the day of the stocking and was camping at the park up intel Thursday. I met him at a spot on the South Llano River not to far from where the fish were put in. We fished from sunup till 10:30 am and caught about 50 Rainbow Trout between us. Kept five for the dinner table and the rest were released. Fish were good quality and full of fight. We both were using Gold Super Duper Lures. Fish were staying by a drop off just down from a rapid. After a great morning of trout fishing we had a fantastic breakfast at Isaacks Restaurant in Junction. Catching a bunch of Rainbow Trout on the South Llano River on a nice December Morning with a good friend. It just don't get any better!

McGregor, Harker Heights, Belton.


Fished all three cities the day after the stockings. Limited out in McGregor. Caught about 10 fish. Gave my limit to a couple of anglers who were having a hard time getting their limits. Released five. Had a hard time at Harker Heights and Belton. Caught only 3 in Harker Heights and had two get offs. Gave three to a angler who was going to have them for lunch. Did not have much time to fish Belton, sinch I fished Harker Heights that morning. Fished a hour and caught one on Yellow Power Bait, and had a get off on the Gold Super Duper. It was hard fishing the creek in Belton since I have never fished there before. Took about 15 minutes to get to a parking spot that was close to where I needed to be. Met some good anglers at all three locations. According to the anglers I spoke with all three stocking days had good crowds and about half of them got their limits on the stocking day. Rooster Tails-White in color, Gold lures, corn, and Power Bait-Yellow in color, got good results. Every one was having a great time. Visiting some cities in the heart of Texas and meeting some good people. It just don't get any better!

Canyon Lake Trail Race & Blanco River.


Fished both the Canyon Lake Trail Race and the Blanco River this past week. Caught limits at both places. The Trail Race is holding a lot of trout. Used a Yellow sinking Grasshopper fly at the Trail Race and a Gold Super Duper Lure at the Blanco. The Blanco had a lot of leaves in the water making it difficult to use lures on some key spots. It took me about 4 hours to limit out, but had a lot of fun doing so. Caught about 15 fish at the Trail Race and Kept five. Caught five on the Blanco and released all five. Fished the mornings at both locations. Day break till about 11:30 am. Still plenty of fish at both locations.

TPW Dumped a bunch at the Canyon Trail Race and Hueco Springs this morning. Friends of mine reported getting their limits with some good quality fish. Gold Super Dupers and White Rooster Tails got good results.

Trail Race at Canyon Lake is on FIRE. Plenty of Rainbow Trout staging by the rapids next to rocks. Easily limited out Friday, Saturday, and this morning. Gold Super Duper Lure did the job.


Side Note: Friend of mine fished Bradfield Pond in Buda this past Thursday and caught about 15. Released 10 and kept 5 for the dinner table. Yellow Power Bait and a Gold Super Duper lure were used.

Hueco Springs-New Braunfels is loaded with trout! Fish the rapids and at the pools at the end of the rapids. Berkley Power Bait-Yellow and Salmon Color are getting the best results. A bunch more stockings taking place Friday including the Hueco Springs and the Canyon Trail Race. Great time to be fishing and enjoying the outdoors.

Fished the Blanco. Only caught three, but they were good size. two in the ten inch range and one in the eleven inch range. Bite was very slow. Also did not see any top action this past weekend. Friend of mine fished Bandera City Park this past Friday and limited out on a White Rooster Tail. Friend said the fish were hanging by the dam. Several stockings taking place in both the San Antonio and Austin area this Friday.

The Canyon Trail Race is loaded with trout. Limited out easily Friday and Saturday. Caught all on a sinking Yellow Lady Bug Fly! 3wt Flyrod.

Friends of mine are still catching good numbers on the Llano River just down from James Crossing. Salmon colored Power Bait is what they are using.

Hit two stockings over the last couple of days. Blanco State Park and the Guadalupe River State Park. Me and my friend Steve limited out and released plenty more. Gold Supe Duper Lures and Power Bait- Yellow in color got the job done.

Plenty of trout in the Austin and San Antonio area. Easily been limiting out both on the fly rod and spinning reel. Fish are staging at the ends of rapids, behind large rocks, and in the deeper pockets of water. Red/Yellow sinking flies, Gold Super Duper Lures, and Yellow Power Bait, get very good results. Also White Rooster Tails and Gold Panther Martin Lures are working well. Plenty of more stocking ahead this week.

Guadalupe River State Park! Still catching a lot of fish. Fish are not hitting on Lures. Yellow, Orange, and Rainbow Colored power bait are getting very good results. Me and my wife caught these this afternoon! Two angler limit and released a few more.

Two man limit Palmetto State Park! Gold and Silver Super Duper Lures, and Yellow and Orange Power Bait. Kept 10 and released a bunch more.

Well done Banker! I haven't been able to get out for any trout fishing yet. I'm going to look and see where the next stocking location is in NE Texas... I'll be headed to South Texas in February. I might need to plan a detour. Now, where did I hide those Super Duper lures????

Nice hour and a half catching session at Blue Hole Park in Georgetown yesterday afternoon. Easily 100 folks fishing. Landed and released 8 rainbows and lots of short strikes. Released all fish unharmed. Caught them all on a very small Rooster Tail. Blue Hole Park is about 15 minutes from where I live. Last year, Blue Hole Park was stocked twice. San Gabriel Park was stocked once. Participation is always heavy at both sites in Georgetown. This year we are only getting stocked once. What’s up with that TPWD?

Limited out easily at the Trail Race this past Friday and Saturday. Caught about 30 fish each trip and kept five each trip for the dinner table. Gold Super Duper Lure on the Rod/reel and a sinking Red/Black Lady Bug fly on the 3wt fly rod, got great results. There are plenty of Rainbow Trout in Texas. Get you some.

Nice ones Trent. Me and Steve fished there Friday and caught a bunch. We kept 10 for the frying pan. We had a few 10 inchers and plenty of small ones. We still had a blast. There were only 12 people there counting me and Steve. We fished for five hours until the wind became the deciding factor to leave. It was a cold trip for sure and well worth it. The fish were right where you said they would be. Thanks for the information.

Fisher Park Limit this morning. Yellow Power Bait!

Me and my friend went to Kerrville yesterday and easily limited out. Met plenty of nice people. Gold Super Duper Lures got good results. Good times.

Friends of mine doing well at the Canyon Trail Race. Good numbers are still holding in some key spots. Also if you want to make the walk to the fishing hole, Lost Maples has some good quality fish there.

Canyon Trail Race is holding a lot fish. Trout are hanging by back water next to rocks. Also Fisher Park in New Braunfels still has some fish. Lures and flies at the trail race and power bait at Fisher Park. Two friends of mine made the trip up to Junction and fished South Llano River State Park. Both limited out using their Fly Rods. This is a good time to catch a Rainbow Trout.

Huaco Springs New Braunfels is holding plenty of fish. Fish are in the rapids down stream and are holding by the larger rocks. Orange power baits are getting the best results.

Plenty of trout in both the Guadalupe and Blanco Rivers. Power bait, Yellow in color is getting good results. Also stocking the Austin and New Braunfels area today.

Some of the ones that I caught and released from Carl Levin Park Park Pond in Harker Heights on Friday. Lost count after 10. I usually do well there every year. Water was cloudy/murkey like always. That’s why I used the fire tiger color crank bait. I have caught more rainbows on the crank bait than on my 2 other standby lures that we have all been using for years. This pond is easy to fish. It is shallow. Great time as usual. Next stop will be a very similar pond in Hutto. Good fishing to all and have fun!

Had a pretty good day at Hamilton Creek Park Lake in Burnet earlier in the week. The lilttle impoundment needs some rain like so many other places. Quite shallow but fun and one of my regular stops every year. Did catch and release more than a limit. February will be a fun month for catching rainbows.

Me and my fishing buddy Steve went to Lockhart State Park and limited out yesterday. Fish are hard to find and we had to work for them. Orange and Yellow Power Bait got the best results. Look for the deeper pockets of water along the creek.


Side Note: Friends of mine are easily limiting out on the Guadalupe River both at the Trail Race and Huaco Springs on River Road.

Anyone been to Castell trout fishing?

Yes Sir, I have fished there a lot. I missed this years stocking , but over the past years I have caught many of many Rainbow Trout. I have take some of my biggest stringers from there! It is one of the best stockings in my opinion. Also the locals are super nice people. Love fishing the Llano River.

Look for the deeper pockets just down from the General Store. I usually fish a Gold Super Duper 502. White Rooster Tails work good. Also if they are not hitting lures you may try Berkley Yellow-Salmon Egg or Orange colored power baits. They will be hard to find. That place was stocked back on December 3 of last year. The Llano River running through Llano is going to be stocked February 9. Parks & Wildlife will be dumping 2000 below the dam at the city park.

Fishing was slow this past Monday at Hyco Springs, New Braunfels. Fish were hard to find. Me and a friend of mine fished from 7:30am till 9:30am Yellow and Orange Power Bait got the best results. Fish were staging in the rapids.

Hyco Springs Limit. Truck arrived today. Fished for three hours and finally limited out. Fish would not touch my Gold Super Duper. Switched to Orange Power Bait and caught five hanging by rocks just up from the rapids. Met two of my friends there and they also limited out. One of them limited on his flyrod. All in all it was a great day!

Canyon Trail Race was stocked Friday. Plenty of trout there from past stockings as well. Blanco River was slow. Also stopped by Earl Scott Pond this past week and easily limited out. Limited with both the flyrod and spinning rod. Gold Super Duper Lure and Earl Scott Pond and a Sinking Red/Orange Lady Bug fly at the trail race .

Palmetto State Park!


Fished today. Bite was good . Myself and my fishing buddy Steve easily limited out. Fellow TFF'er and friend Steve aka F4Gator along with his friend John arrived and picked up their limits as well. We released a bunch and kept our limits for the frying pan. Gold Super Duper Lures got great results.

Live Oak, stocking today! Bull Frog and Kingfisher Lake later this week!

Fished Earl Scott Pond, San Antonio, Hyco Springs, New Braunfels, and Onion Creek, Austin. Limited out at all locations. Fish have moved down stream at Hyco Springs. Fish have also moved down stream from the falls on Onion Creek. Fish on Onion Creek and Hyco Springs are very good quality and size compared to the smaller water bodies. Also the Canyon Trail Race is holding some good size fish. Fish have moved a little down stream but you can still get some just down from the Canyon Dam , fishing the rapids. Fished with the Flyrod and was using a Yellow and Red sinking Lady Bug Fly. Stocking season will be coming to a close early March. Catch em while you can.

Wife and myself took a trip to Palmetto State Park two days after the stocking. We limited out in 2 hours. It was enjoyable watching her fish and reeling them in. There were six other anglers there and most were catching fish also. Orange and Salmon Colored Power Bait got the best results.

Also fished Live Oak the day after the stocking. Got there at daybreak and limited out in a hour. Orange Power Bait was used.

Easily Limited out on the stocking day at Shirley McDonald Park in Round Rock. Met some nice people and anglers there. Fish were very active. Gold Super Duper got very good results. Caught over 15 fish and kept five for the dinner table. Friend of mine who went with me also caught a bunch and limited out. He was also using a Gold Super Duper.

Trout bite was slow at the Canyon Trail Race. Managed a limit in 4 hours of fishing. All caught on the fly. Fish were holding in back water behind larger rocks. Heard from the other anglers that there were a lot of trout between 4th and 2ad crossing. Trophy Zone rules in affect there, I think. Red and Orange Lady Bird flies got the good results.

Only two more stockings at the Canyon Trail Race. 2/21 and 3/2. Southside Lions and Miller Park both in San Antonio last stocking 2/21.

Picked up four nice trout fishing Lockhart State Park Monday. Get them while they last.

Looks like Collin County ponds are favored. 5000+ in little Frisco pond but only 1500 in much larger Royce City pond? I wonder if Collin County is subsidizing trout stockings. Rowlett did it 1 year and paid for some larger ones.

They're releasing in Mckinney on Sunday. I'm off work Monday so I've got no excuse! My trout trip earlier in the season got cancelled so I gotta make up for it!

Hint -- if they say they are releasing on Sunday, they are really releasing on Friday. I heard it from someone in the know.

They will be stocked usually on Friday. The reason for the Sunday date being posted is that there maybe a kids contest or some other type of event on Saturday. I would call the park office and they will give you the answer. If you do go on Sunday, you should still easily catch some fish.

Power Bait
under a bobber, or floating above a small weight ?

Use either the Orange or Yellow-Salmon flavored, power bait. Do not use a bobber. Fish off the bottom with a small weight about 6 inches above the bait. Also make sure your hooks are very small ones. Usually size 14 to 18. I use the small micro treble hooks.

I fish Heritage Park in Mt. Pleasant . There's a large fountain near the bridge and I'll get 'em by running a small inline through it .

Fished the Guadalupe River by the Lazy L & L. Parks and Wildlife stocked the river that flows through their campgrounds. There is a day fee you have to pay. Caught a bunch on the flyrod and all the fish had good size. Fish were released. As far as the Canyon Trail Race goes the fish have moved further down stream well into the trophy zone. Friend of mine who fished the Huaco Springs this past week said the fished have moved further down stream as well and off of the Huaco Springs property. Will be using the kayak a lot the next few weeks.

Got my limit plus today.

And what’s up with the orange one? A special million dollar fish or some kind of mutant? I caught two in a row today.

The Orange/Yellow colored Rainbow Trout is a results of mutation in the trout's DNA. They are sometimes called Palomino or Banana Trout. They are pretty common in stocked trout.

In WV we called them Goldens and targeted them when we spotted them in streams.

Actually caught 6, 2nd fish was particularly small and I’m hungry so I threw it back so I could have a bigger one. All 6 caught in about 20 minutes.

How does everyone clean and cook theirs?

I simply take out the gills and gut em. Rinse them out real good with cold water. I normally fry them but my wife is a very, very, good cook and has several ways she prepares Rainbow Trout. She sometimes marinates them for a few hours, and then dips them in some sort of meal that she puts spices in. She either fries or bakes them. I have had fish prepared in many different ways since I got married. They turn out FANTASTIC.

Here are just a few that she has prepared and cooked.

Do the rib and pin bones soften up enough to eat or do you pick through them?

You pick through them. The meat slides off the bones pretty easy. You need to watch out for the very small bones. I have a friend who picks out all of the meat from the fish first, and then eats it. You can make fish tacos that way also. The more you eat Rainbow Trout the better you get picking the meat from the bones. It is fairly easy. I have been eating trout for years and love them.


Side Note: My favorite fish is White Bass, Crappie, and Bluegill.

i just gut them and cook them whole. cut the head off if space is limited in the cooking vessel but it's not necessary.

Easiest way is to just wrap them in foil with seasonings and butter and just bake.

This time I fried them in a thin layer of oil and they turned out great.

P.S. with either cooking method you can just scrape the skin away, no need for scaling or skinning before cooking.

Looks like March 7th will be the last stocking day for the 2024/2025 Stocking Season. There are still plenty of Rainbow Trout all across Texas. Some places could be already fished out, but others may still be holding some nice ones. It has been a lot of fun. Can't wait till next stocking season!

Limited out at the Canyon Trail Race yesterday. It was stocked for the last time this stocking season with 500 fish. Caught 15 using my go to Gold Super Duper Lure. Kept five nice ones for the dinner table. Get em while they last.

Went fishing for some late winter Bluegill and ended up catching just one Bluegill and eight Rainbow Trout. The trout were hold overs from a stocking that took place early January. Fish were caught on worms. Could have caught more, but ran out of worms. Kept five for the dinner table and gave three away to an angler who was not catching anything. I did not have my trout gear. Some stocked areas are still holding plenty of Rainbow Trout across Texas! Get them while you can!

How late into the warmer months can they survive? Is it a specific temp that kills them off?

It depends on the water body. The water bodies in North Texas in the Panhandle area that usually have cooler temperatures going into the spring, the trout usually last longer than the ones stocked in my area, Southcentral Texas. Also some stocking sites have cold water springs that feed into the water body. The only place in Texas you can catch Rainbow Trout year around is on the Guadalupe River below the Canyon Lake Trail Race down to the fourth crossing. I have friends that have caught trout in July and August fishing the Trophy Zone that is on that part of the Guadalupe River. The latest I have caught a stocked Rainbow Trout was April 24, 2020, which is still the current weight and catch & release record for South Grape Creek. That part of the creek where I caught the fish is fed by a cold water spring. It would have probably died during the late spring, early summer.


Side Note: For the most part by early April most of the trout if not caught, will die because of the water temperature. Usually the highest water temperature they can tolerate is between 65 and 70 degrees. They are a cold water species.

March Limit: Blanco River! Yellow Power Bait! Texas waters that were stocked are still holding some fish! The trout will be thinning out as the warmer weather approaches. Get em while they last!

I actually got a limit of trout fishing McKinney Falls State Park this past week. White colored sinking fly got very good results. For what I saw there are still some fish there.

I am using Power Bait & will also get worms

I usually use the Yellow or Orange Power Bait and have gotten good results all season long. I have also caught plenty of trout using worms over the years. I got a limit last month while fishing for Bluegill using worms. If there are any trout left you should catch a few using both baits. I would use the worms because just about every fish loves a worm and you have a better chance of catching a variety of different species of fish . Enjoy the time with your daughter and no matter how the trip goes, you will have some 'Life Time Memories" which are priceless.
