I know all of you probably have several pieces of kit that have a rubber or rubberized handle or coating...binos, flashlights, etc. I have had more than one item with such material turn sticky over time. REALLY sticky! I recently discovered the handle on my nice Fishpond boat net had become so sticky I could not really use it.

I contacted Fishpond about what to do and they solved my problem by sending me a brand new net, but could not propose a fix. I've had this happen to binos and a hunting spotlight that had a rubberized grip. This stuff may not even be rubber, but it can sure turn sticky.

Anyone had this happen and figured out a fix?

TIA

First I try cleaning it with Lacquer Thinner. If that doesn’t work then I try Goo Gone. If both don’t work I put on baby powder to see if I can make it usable. The last resort is to clean again with Lacquer Thinner then apply a product like Flex Seal. Last last resort involves fire and epoxy. scared

We recently had similar problems with old rubber items. Everything we found recommended using isopropyl alcohol on them. It kinda dissolved some of the gooey, but didn't really solve the problem. I guess if we had continued, all the rubber would have dissolved, which is sort of a fix. But, we didn't go that far. We have been GooGone users for years, but that didn't solve our problems. Let us all know if you find a real solution. I like Barry's fire and epoxy treatment. IslandJim

I assume this is the result of it being a petroleum product of some percentage. I have had cameras do this as well. Never was able to fix it.

it caused from keeping things too long. no idea what causes it but bet most have experienced it. have 2013 Buick Verano, the rubberrized radio volume control is getting eaten up.

Corn starch or baby powder will fix it. I use it on kickezz recoil pads.

I've done the powder thing, and sand can work the same way. Doesn't fix it, but at least absorbs some of the sticky goo. Sometimes best to just cover it up with black athletic tape.
