So, I purchased the 2-Bank 10A On-Board Battery Charger - GEN5X2 and hooked it to 2 12v lithium batteries. Made sure set to specifically charge lithium. Checked back in 4 hours and not charged yet but the unit was very hot to touch especially underneath. Is this normal and has anyone had this issue. Bass Pro is willing to exchange it for another one or refund my money. Is this a bad product and if so, what is a good one to look into?

I have never felt my GenPro10x3 in the boat, but I have a little NOCO Genius 2 charging my back-up Ionic 12v50 and it doesn’t get hot at all. (Well…maybe “warm”…but not hot.)

This little 2 amp charger says it’s going to take over 18 hours to charge this battery from 25% to 100%. I’d guess your 5 amp would still take 8-9 hours to charge each battery, including cell balancing time at the end. I’d let it run its course this first time and see what it does.

Do you have Bluetooth monitoring to see the batteries state of charge, internal temp, and actual charging amps going to the battery? If so, it’s an easy way to tell if the charger is working correctly.

No, I don't have Bluetooth. It was so hot I unplugged it. Just don't know if I should go with a different brand charger.

I have a MinnKota PCL and it’ll almost scald you; but it’s a 4 bank 15 amp model. I think they all get pretty hot.

That's just crazy. You don't worry about it causing a fire? I mean the fuel tank is right there and not to mention every kind of flammable fluids.

The heat they give off isn't going to cause your gas tank to catch fire. Its normal for them to get hot. I have the same charger as Grout, you can feel the heat rise off it. Previous two different chargers were 4 bank 10 amp and they put off heat too.

I have a DualPro professional single 15 that I use at work. The case cracked, so I built a case out of wood with a metal perforated top…to let heat out. It DOES get hot.

I have a dozen or so different lithium chargers as a part of my channel. They all get pretty warm, no surprise there. You can probably cook a steak on my 50a lithium charger hammer

No mention of what size battery you have, but 4 hours may not be enough time at 10a.

My charger is a decent distance from my fuel tank, but I always keep an eye on it and don’t ever leave it plugged in overnight. I need to move mine to a place where it’ll get more air flow, but I also kind want to go to a single 36v battery and redo my whole setup.

When I can, I put a small portable fan blowing onto the charger, not always practical though.

I started looking at the same question on different forums and surprisingly several people are saying the same thing as far as their chargers do get hot. It's crazy but I guess what can you do. Thank you all for chiming in.

I recently got a new minn Kota precision and all new lithiums, plugged it in and charged the batts in the garage before installing in the boat. I couldn’t believe how hot it got. I have 3 boats at the house right now with onboard chargers so I plugged them all in and checked, all were very hot. I’ve probably had 20-25 different onboard chargers and never realized it before.

Yes they get hot, wouldn't hurt to keep the rear lid open, I mounted mine with standoffs so the back isn't pushed up next to the carpet. But with that said, these are sealed units and that is the nature of a switching power supply. Just get in a habit to look for all green lights when you unplug. I had one channel go bad, and they replaced it under warranty.

My single bank noco gets hot but my 4 bank doesn't for whatever reason
Glad to hear it's hot just me. I have to unplugg all of it every once in a while so it doesn't give a false full reading

When I am not fishing I am thinking about fishing. And mostly what I should have done differently my last trip!
