I currently run Lowrance with a 16’ on console, a 12’ on bow and then an Active Target w/Ghost TM. I would like to purchase a HB for mapping but do not fully understand the best options for HB. I was thinking of swapping Lowrance’s and adding a HB at the console. Can I have some opinions and thoughts please. I don’t have the money to do a total start over so please keep that in mind. I also do not know the difference between the Helix or Solix (I think one is color which would be important for map shading?). Thank you for the help!

Hi Todd, The Hb Helix is the most common of the birds out there. They are none touch and are pretty easy to learn. The Solix is another animal, it has a lot more features and is fully touch screen. With mapping, make sure you purchase the new VX card, it will have shade relief in it which you can adjust the settings and colors. The Helix would be a great option for you. If you need further assistance, give me a call 817.909.6492, we also sell them on our online store bassboatwired.com

You would lose the ability to place a waypoint and have it show up on all your other units. You fish on the bow and you would have your mapping on the console. You don't say if you have HDS Live or Pro either way they have built in depth shading that does not need a subscription to keep working. Go to CMAP.com and look at the mapping for your area lakes. The CMap Reveal has depth shading and Shaded Relief.

Thank you both for info. Larry, the application you are speaking of on C-MAP, is that where I have to go in and set my depths and shading myself. I am currently running Lives.

Yes its under the mapping menu there are 2 shading profiles they are already set but you can modify the colors and depts per color. Your lives have CMAP installed most likely cmap contours plus. or discovery onboard depending how new your units are.

Just my $.02.
I've looked at the new, and some not so new, charting options with the shading, etc.
I can't understand much of anything. Just give me the contours. I don't need pretty colored pictures.
You guys that buy these things, do you really use them for fishing? Especially when you really zoom in?
