Does anyone fly fish the surf in Galveston?

I do. With 6" flies tied out of mare tail on a 9wt cast 80 yards out. Haven't caught much. Couple Jacks and reds. Smaller gear might work better. Good luck and let us know how you do!

Really? No one in Texas fly fishes the surf?

I have not fished the surf in Galveston, but I have in Port Aransas and Port Mansfield. Success varies greatly with wave height and water clarity. With shrimp flies and clousers I have caught whiting, sea trout, redfish, and pompano. Ladyfish are increasing in numbers throughout the Texas coast and they are fun on a fly. I have done much better on jetties, around piers, and rocky points than in the surf.

I was checking out some web cams in Port Aransas and the beaches look like they would be great for casting a fly - in the right conditions of course.

Thank you. But I did not design it I only tied it. It is called an Ultra Shrimp and there are tying vids on the internet.

If you have a choice I would head to Port Aransas. There are lots of fly fishing options there. If you head that way let me know and I would be happy to give you some spots to try. That fly will work great. I know some flounder that would hunt that down.
