Well, it was a heck of a week down there at Caddo, I got down there late wed afternoon and looked at a few ramps on the Louisiana side and put in at the railroad bridge ramp to look around. I caught 2 dinks fairly quick but that was it as I was just checking out the area. That night I stayed at Tuckers Fish Camp and launched there thur morning.
Launching thur was a bit of a challenge with the combination of lower water level, steep ramp and compacted vegetation but once I made it out to the main lake it was fairly clear. I have to be honest I was completely overwhelmed by the lake and attempting to break it down. I fished from Tuckers all the way up to Shady Glade Cafe and back to Tuckers without a single bite.
After figuring out absolutely nothing I started to fish cypress trees on the main lake and around 3pm I found a small clump of trees and was able to land (2) 20"+ fish on a crankbait on back-to-back cast. Which made me feel a little better as the day wasn't a complete waste. That evening, I checked into the Uncertain INN and MOTEL which I highly recommend.
Friday, I launched at Buzzards Bay Landing boat ramp with about 20 other kayak anglers and fished around the Potters Point area focusing on cypress trees again. I fished until around 11am without a single bite and was just not figuring anything out. I decided to tie on a power drop shot on my flipping rod with 50# braid, 4" StrikeKing Rage Bug tipped with an orange spike it marker and a 3/8oz tungsten drop shot weight. Within 5mins I got my first bite which I just let it run with the bait and didn't set the hook. The area was loaded with other anglers, and I did not want to stand out with a hookset. The bite came off of cypress tree with a broken secondary tree next to it. I moved to another tree that was set up the same way and again got a bite immediately. At this point I knew I had a little something put together so I drove around the whole area marking every tree I could find with a laydown or some other kind of unusual similarity. I moved to the bank and started to hit the few boat docks that were there and again got a bite on a drop shot so I put it down and picked up a chart/white Colorado blade spinnerbait and caught a 18" off of a dock. I ended the day with that and feeling pretty good that I figured out a pattern.
Sat morning (day 1) I launched back at Buzzards Bay with around 15 other kayaks and took off at 645am to my first spot. I had it in my mind that I was not going to get a bite before 11am and if I did it would be a bonus fish as I had not gotten a bite before then in 3days of fishing. As I was fishing in my area, I would just hit each tree I marked and did not cast to anything else as I did not want to waste valuable time. The area was loaded with other kayak anglers, but all seemed to be having a slow day. While in my area I was able to put a limit together by 1030am which absolutely blew me away and it was all on my dropshot rig. From 1030-2pm I did not get another bite,. I moved to the dock that I got bitten on the day before and was able to catch a cull off of it on a spinnerbait. With about 3mins left in the day I landed a 18" off a tree and culled with it as well. After day 1 I was sitting in 55th/194 anglers with 85.25"
Sunday (day 2) I again launched from Buzzards Bay but there were around 5 or 6 of us this time. Again, I ran across to the same area and pretty much had it all to myself. I fished hard until around noon and did not get a single bite. There was absolutely no wind this time and I believed that it slowed my area down. I ran back towards the ramp where the boat docks were that I had been fishing and caught a small dink. As I was fishing down the bank, I got stuck on a broken off dock post that was just under the water and got into one of my scupper holes. I could not get off of this post, so I had to jump in the water that was chest deep, lift the kayak up over the post and then climb back into the kayak. I was completely spun out at this time mentally. I was close to hanging it up and heading home but got a pep talk from the wife and kept at.
From 2pm-3pm I went on a flurry landing 9 fish for a limit and was able to cull to 78" flipping boat docks with the dropshot rig landing me in 53rd/194 anglers. Overall, I was happy with the standings, not satisfied but happy as I was able to figure out a pattern each day and catch a limit on a body of water I never had been to before.
Caddo is a strangely beautiful place and glad I had the opportunity to fish it.
