1992 Mariner 175 EFI. Was out fishing the other day running down the lake the motor just sputtered a couple times and died like it was out of fuel but it wasn't. I was thinking fuel system issue but as I was checking everything noticed there were numerous wires burned and connections melted. I believe they run from the stator and down to the voltage regulator/rectifier. I am in the process of rewiring and splicing wires. When I get the rewiring done I will check and make sure I have fire to the plugs, but my question is, would that be a sign of a bad regulator or stator? How do I tell if the regulators or stator is bad?

But the wires were burnt and fried that run from Stator/flywheel area to voltage regulators. I'm trying to get an idea that if the voltage regulators fried, would that cause the outboard to suddenly quit. Or would it be the stator or trigger that would cause it to suddenly quit.

after you figure out whats broke best thing ta do with new stuff is cut those bullet connectors off then solder and heat shrink tha connections,, they are tha main reason for burning tha things up...............

My 50hp did that exact same thing and it turned out to be the voltage regulator.

Here is what I have figured out. I swapped the red & blue with the red/white & blue/white on the switch boxes and the spark stayed on the same side. found some info that says if spark moves to other side its stator if it stays the same switchbox. Is this generally true?
