Pflueger spinning reels with soft plastic/rubber knob on handle, 5-6 years old. When not in use they're in a stand-up rod rack in the house.

What makes the knobs get "gummy"?

What can I do to fix the "gumminess"?

What can I do to prevent it?

Fishing, a man knows a serenity of soul and peace of mind that he finds in doing nothing else, and it makes no difference whether or not he catches anything. The mind of a true fisherman is not on petty subjects.

I have multiple Shimano Chronarch’s that have done the same thing. I’m interested in an answer, other than “buy new handles”.

I put reel grips on mine.

Sucks, but I couldn't find any way to clean.

$5 at TW.

I cleaned mine with rubbing alcohol. Put some on a cotton ball and after a couple of minutes it leaves a smooth plastic handle. Seems like the rubber is just a coating on the plastic handle because so far, none that I have cleaned have had the gummy stuff return.

X2 on the cleaning with rubbing alcohol, but add a lil WD-40 to each reel knob to keep them from gumming up.
