This. I work for a small store and we don't have squat, and we're not cheap.

Elliots in Plano is still around. I don’t know about the other stores.

The article I read that corporate true value is filing bankruptcy and selling, but the independent stores are staying independent. The independent stores make up the vast majority of true value hardware stores.

Ace in Red Oak. No telling how many times I’ve been in there since 1992.
Great store.

We had a great Ace Hardware on Kuykendahl until a few years ago. They opened a new one on FM1488 that doesn't have squat.

Ace Hardware in Rockport is great.
Best retail store in that area hands down and they have a huge fishing section.

Johnny's True Value in Harlingen is a .9 acre two story building; they have a lot of great stuff. I can't go in there without spending some time browsing. They have some very savvy employees there.

Bidenomics

Home Depot and Lowe’s are culprits you should blame.

Neighbor and myself were headed to son's house to fix the valve on his icemaker line. I stopped at Ace to get needed parts. He asked why I did not go to Lowes. I said because I know Ace will have what I need. Also had a coupon. I think 1 of the issues at hardware stores is the value of their average sale. Last 2 times at Ace I spent about $5.

Go ahead and add Amazon, AliExpress, Harbor Freight, and Northern Tool to the list.

Bigger picture from CBS News report:
“Rise in business bankruptcies
In 2024, commercial bankruptcies have jumped 20% compared with the year-ago period, with more than 22,550 businesses seeking protection from their creditors, according to data provider Epiq AACER.
Larger corporate failures have also increased. Over the last 12 months, 113 companies with more than $100 million in assets have filed for either Chapter 7 or Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Cornerstone Research said in a new report.”

In a lot of cases, Corporate dictating what a store stocks vs. a knowledgeable store manager (who listens to customers) results in poor product/inventory.

Academy Sports is a perfect example.
