I am looking at getting one from the dealer or maybe online. The one online looks identical to the one I lost at 1/2 the cost from dealer. I have heard that some dealers will not program unless purchased from them. I have also heard that a reputable locksmith can program them at a cost less than the dealer. Has anybody had to do this, and which route did you chose. This is for a 2019 Accord if that matters...TIA

Everything you have heard is correct. Check with the lock smith and see how much it is to get the key and the programing from them. If you buy your own key online and have someone program it and there is a problem, which there sometimes is, then you are out the programing cost again. Obviously if you buy the key through the locksmith, they will warranty the program.

First, check YouTube to see how to program it yourself then buy it on eBay. Have done this a few times with zero issues. On eBay you can buy OEM at half the price or aftermarket at 20% of the cost of a dealer purchased fob

I just had one made for Riley at half the cost of a dealer. They will mail you a little box you plug in that programs the fob

Batteries + sells the fobs and will program That, Traders Village in Grand Prairie or most any locksmith can do it. The only ones that need to go to the dealer that I am aware of is Mercedes. I paid $420 for one around 6 years ago. You were required to bring proof of ownership and your id before they'd do it.

There was a van and tent set up selling key fobs at the Plano Costco last weekend. First time I have seen that.

Online and there’s an area tech that programs the thing. Much cheaper than dealer.
