I have seen people using google maps to look at images of lakes and going back to a past date. Does anyone know how to do this?

You might be thinking of Google Earth but only the online version Google Earth Pro has historical images and must be installed on your computer.

It wont work on an I phone or I pad you need a desk top or lap top. You go to Google Earth Pro, then up at the top left you choose one of the options I think it's tools, the icon historical imagery pops up down towards the bottom, once there you get a sliding tool bar that will allow you to go back in time to view images back to around 1990 if available.

You can download Google Earth on your phone but it only shows current image. The Pro version with historical data can only be downloaded to a computer

You actually can use the time lapse now on an apple iPhone. Click the box on the top right and go down to “time lapse”. Not sure when they started this, but it’s been there for a few months.

Well I'll be. Just looked at it on my phone and it works. Haven't opened the app since I downloaded it a few years ago because it was worthless without it.

But the time-lapse doesn't let you pause. Still not as useful as GEP on desktop but pretty cool.

Grout... you don't need a time lapse of Choke Canyon. I was there Sunday, it's empty. (Of water and fish) OMG

Yes sir, it is! But, I used the time lapse to remind me of the times that I used to have. crying
