Reading about Elijah’s ministry and how God sent ravens to bring Elijah bread and meat reminds me of a time in my life when I did not have a home. I was without a job, and I was facing a mental-health challenge at the same time.



One evening I walked to a church and told the security guard that I planned to spend the night on the church steps. He nodded and told me that a lot of people do that. At that moment I heard someone call my name. I recognized a husband and wife from an organization I used to participate in. They asked me what I was doing. When I told them I was planning to spend the night on the church steps, they responded, “No, you are not. You are going home with us.” I accepted their offer.



They took me to their home and for the next five years provided me food, shelter, transportation, and friendship. I had several mental-health crises during that time, and they were persistent in their love and care for me. While living with them, I became employed, got a car, and found a place to live. Just as God provided for Elijah, I believe that God provided for me by inspiring this couple to open their home and hearts to me.

Holy God, thank you for watching over your children and for the people who follow your leading and do your work in the world. Amen.
