Hi Guys. Welp, short-ish notice. My planned trip to Durango in October has sadly collapsed. My sister, with whom we were planning to visit and stay, rudely (just kidding!) has taken a job in California and can't be there. This throws Wifey and me for a loop. But where there's chaos, there's opportunity, hey! Now we're thinking of making a sort of road-trip loop thingy of the time. We already have a couple of motel/cabins on the way there booked and can't cancel without penalty, so we're thinking of going somewhere else in Colorado, at least for a day or two.
Gunnison, the town, has come up as a visiting destination. We might stay there a couple of nights. Can anyone PM me about a good spot to wade-fish on the Upper Gunnison, fairly close to Gunnison, in early October? That would be, as far as I can tell, the Upper Gunnison, the East River, or the Taylor River. I'm not looking for a big hike into a canyon like at Black Canyon or anything. A smaller hike is ok. In any case, I'm looking for a decent spot to wade-fish for a day. Fish one day, get out of there. It can be pocket waters, riffles, flats, whatever, just wade-fish friendly. One decent section of wade-fishing is fine. I'm pretty used to a rough, bumpy, slick river bottom.
Any advice is appreciated. You can PM me so as not to hot-spot. I won't spread it around. Anyway, I appreciate any tips. Thanks! Jonbo

I will send you some intel via text, but go to Roaring Judy Hatchery and fish the public stretch. It's just up CO 135 from Almont. Kokanee are running and the East river holds hatchery escapee fish and wild browns. There is a public access spot on the Gunny just below the confluence of the East and Taylor. Other than that - take at least a few hours and go look for pigs at the Taylor C&R. 10 pound fish are common, an 18" brown is ho-hum. The colors on these fish are amazing.

Thanks, Jeff! I'll try all that.
