I was looking at the Top Lures article from the BASS Open on the river and a guy had what looks like a small patch of velcro on the top of his frog. What's that for?
Does it help the frog get caught up in the fishes' mouth or something?

Does it help the frog get caught up in the fishes' mouth or something? Correct the 'loop' portion of the velcro is added to the top of the frog to make it more "sticky".

They are on the head of the Fred Roumbanis Boom Boom frog that Stanford Lures put out originally but is now sold under the Frog Factory brand. He says it gets the teeth of the bass "stuck" in it and improves landing percentages.

Brilliant - I'll have to try to doctor a few of mine up and see how it works.... I don't know if it's truly more effective but it sure seems like it couldn't hurt anything by doing it.

thinking this through... why would you want to inhibit the frog from being pulled out of the mouth, when the act of the frog sliding out allows the hook points to start penetrating... Hmm going to have to call "gimmick" - buy my frog because it sticks to their teeth... I want hooks holding onto the fish, not velcro !... or maybe I'm over thinking it... lol

I see his logic but can't say it's more effective but I don't see any way that it can hurt by having it.that velcro ain't gonna hold back a good, strong hookset. I can see the velcro actually helping keep them pinned until you get a hookset on them though.

I think Culprit used to make a plastic worm with velcro on it, but it never really caught on.

The idea behind it is that it sticks in the frogs teeth and improves your chances of a successful hookset. I think that is more for sales and to set it apart for others, but even without that addition it is the best frog on the market. Walks so easy and the plastic is soft so my hookup percentage is through the roof. I have a few of the old Snag Proof Wobletron's because they have the swimming feet on them, but outside of that the Boom Boom is the only frog I throw now.

Had dinner with a group that included Roumbanis several years back and the velcro frog came up. If I recall right, he said the concept was that once the fish is hooked in the top of the mouth, the velcro gets snagged in the upper jaw teeth to keep the frog and hooks from moving as much (and widening hook holes) while fighting and especially jumping. More about keeping the fish pinned after hooked than doing anything before setting the hook. Actual effect, who knows? Interesting logic though.

When I am not fishing I am thinking about fishing. And mostly what I should have done differently my last trip! #Brockstarama

Dean Rojas did a video about this a few years ago if I remember right, and yep it was to have something there to stick to their lips and increase the catch ratio.
