I was itching to find a good place to take the yak and get into some bass for my long birthday weekend and once I saw the cool weather in the forecast I decided Fayette was always a good bet. It didn't disappoint. I arrived Sunday afternoon and got the campsite set up. Decided to make a quick run out around the park cove. Found nothing shallow so I hit the creek ledges on the way back to camp and got two 2 pounders on lipless cranks in 9-13 foot.
Got up Monday morning and only ever saw 2 other boats on the lake and they were both tearing up huge bream on light tackle (I never knew it had such good bream fishing!) I headed straight for the timber across from the other park and started the catching. First fish was a 4+ on a lipless on the hardwood on the point. As I got back into the wood deeper I kept finding fish holding tight to the wood in 6-12 foot. All were caught on a tilapia colored square bill. Cleaned up that whole area and paddled back to camp for lunch. Took a little break then headed back out around 5pm to the timber in the cove south of Oak Thicket and started catching right away again in the same 6-12 foot hardwood. Finished up catching a few more on the creek ledges in 10-16 ft on deep diving crankbaits on my way back.

It was a great place to spend my last day at 57 years old catching the fattest bass in Texas. Ended up with a pile of 2-4 pound bass! Hoping to get back up there soon!

Happy Birthday! Excellent post! You made me miss my Hobie!! It’s OK, though. I have a Jackson Kraken that I’m really enjoying. Just wait till you get to be around 65! Getting out to the campsite takes on a whole new meaning!

A good rule of angling philosophy is not to interfere with another fisherman's ways of being happy, unless you want to be hated.

Yeah that Hobie Mirage 360 drive was the best thing that could have ever happened to a bass angler. Especially in thick timber like Fayette and Coleto Creek. You can pick apart cover like a brain surgeon! If I had to give up the 360 drive I think I'd give up bass fishing and just chase sharks from the jetties...anything else just wouldn't be the same. I love being way back in thick timber pulling fish after fish watching the big, expensive bass boats around the outside edges casting in because they can't get their boat in there. I'm not familiar with the model you are now fishing...does it have something similar to the 360?
