I’ve fished for carp and buffalo for many years and have just now decided to try hair rigs. When you set them out, do you leave slack in the line and let them hook themselves? Sorry if that’s a dumb question.

I keep my line tight to the slip weight, but have a light drag. Different anglers use different techniques.

I keep slack in my line to allow them to suck in the bait with no tension. The slack also will allow them to run a bit and hook themselves. I do not use a hair rig though.

Keep the line tight BUT you want to have a bait runner reel... One you can take out of gear so the fish can run with the line. When it starts really running put the hammer down on them.

So keep the line tight, but loose.

I caught 14 small ones today on a tight line. grin But as I said, other techniques will work.

I’ve got two spinning reels with dual drags to use like that but haven’t actually used them. 🤔
