So it seems there is not a large mouth bass within 150 miles of us down here. Lack of water in most of our lakes along with lack of management in the rest leaves us with no options but to drive over two hours north or 3 hours east yet here they are building new lakes like Bois D arc in north Texas already saturated with lakes. How have there not been any proposals at least to prospect areas for water retention down here? Yes Im complaining.

After living down there for a few years, I will say this as nicely as possible: The state government doesn't give a rats [censored] about South Texas unfortunately.

What are you going to fill them with? Imaginary rain?

It’s a beating! I guess I’ll try braunig’s redfish one of these days. I never thought I’d see the day that all the ramps at Choke were dry. Just like today, next to zero rain in the watershed, it’s baffling. bang

Radar looks good at the moment and Uvalde got 5+” earlier. Maybe enough water to keep the ramp open for a little longer.

If Bois D'arc aggravates you, just wait. Lake Ralph Hall is coming to Fannin County. I have complained about this before and I will do it again. When is the 4th largest city in the US, Houston, going to get some love? We haven't had a lake built since 1978.

Be safe,

I'm sure they look at average rainfall in areas, makes no sense to build a lake if it's gonna stay dry or low a majority of the time. South Texas for deer hunting and North Texas for fishing.

The guide on Choke said they have permits to connect the Neuces to the Frio river, it’s just waiting on govt BS. Personally, I don’t see it ever happening and although the Neuces does tend to get a little more rain, I don’t think it would make any difference.

Back when they were building the Choke Canyon dam before there was any water yet backed up, we were constructing a house outside of the gate at Calliham, and we got to talking to one of the biologist who was in charge of the area at that time. He had us jump into his pickup and he gave us a grand tour of the lake bottom along with quite a few stories about the history of the area.
I remember driving across a bridge down in the river bottom and looking down into what he described as the Frio River that was going to feed the lake and all I saw was a shallow narrow creek that had no flow that was visible, if there even was one.
I remember laughing and asking are you serious, that's the river?
I probably insulted the guy, but I really thought he was joking!
The joke ended up on me though, as the lake filled up faster than I thought it ever would, but it still isn't enough to maintain a lake the size of Choke without the help of a hurricane as we now see.
That talk about the Nueces and Frio joining was going on back then also, and it would certainly help, but until it happens it's a myth.

Just one more cast!

I hope Choke stays low enough to keep boats off forever. It's a great private kayak lake for me now and the bass are more concentrated banana

Everytime the state wants to build a new lake the tree huggers all get up in arms and start filing law suits like crazy is my understanding. At one time back in the 80's we were told there were 22 new lakes being planned. Well fast forward and we have maybe 2 since then?
