45 Million Americans age 6+ -played golf – BOTH on-course and off-course – in 2023.

This record-setting total includes 26.6 million people who played on a golf course and another 18.4 million who participated exclusively in off-course golf activities at places like driving ranges, indoor golf simulators, or golf entertainment venues like Topgolf.

Around 58 million Americans flocked to the nation’s waterways to engage in freshwater, saltwater, and fly-fishing activities in 2023. This represented the highest U.S. fishing participation rate in over a decade.

I did include everything in both hobbies and from credible sources.

Interesting. Advertisers look at fishermen as having empty pockets compared to golfers- probably some truth in that.

You can walk around a golf course and watch the pro of your choice, it's a spectator friendly sport that has multiple levels and private and public access almost anywhere in the country - not to mention the ever inviting 19th hole for scenery and beverage. To be a fishing spectator you have the basic expenses of a boat and a haul vehicle just to sit out on the water and maybe get a view of what your pro is doing. The viewing access and access to those viewers is what makes a sport payout valuable to companies.

Those statistics really dont apply to this situation. The statistic needed would be how people people watch or follow the pros of golf or fishing. But then those really dont matter either. The money is not in fishing like golf, period, and its not just TV. What game do all these big bank and corporate CEOs, owners, etc play? Golf. It wont happen but if you get that bunch hooked on fishing, the tv slots would follow because their money moves the needle all over the world. Thats the money needed to make this dream the pros have work and even with that money the PGA has almost gone under and still have the same players griping about payouts and stuff. So, bring on the money into pro fishing, the complaining wont stop

Maybe they should take their fishing poles to a golf course see how many casts it takes to get from the tee box to their jig in the hole. That would be more fun that watching either fishing or golf.

Announcer “Steez is about to tee off with a once ounce tungsten on his 7’4” Amistad….WOW! He really got all of that one! Now he’s just 300’yards from the hole….looks like he’s about to use his 8’ swim bait rod…..UGLY BACKLASH!”

He’s now going to the yeti for another beer.

Etc etc
cheers

All major bass tournaments are held on public waterways... I'd be surprised if any major golf tournaments are held on a public course... I'd love to see a duffer show up at a major and just tee off and play the course like it's a regular Saturday afternoon... Dan roflmao

The majors are played on public courses very often- The Masters being the exception.

The majors are rarely played on public access courses.

Masters None

Pga Champ. 15 times since 1916

US Open 6 course some multiple times for a total of 17 times since 1895

The Open (British) Championship is played on a rota of 14 courses, which 7 of them have public access.

So, 80+ times a major has been held on a public course. That's a lot to me, but definitely somewhere between his comment(surprised if any are) and yours ("rarely").

That was ESPN's dream until they realized it was not going to get those numbers. They were trying the NASCAR NHRA approach, which they eventually dumped the NHRA like they did Bassmaster. They did spend a ton of money trying to promoted it before that. Simply put, the sport is just not where golf, NASCAR, football and others are on the fans base.

Did a quick google search, 25.6 million people play golf a year, 54.5 million fish per year. Dont know what that means but Ive never seen fishing on NBC for 4 hours in the middle of a sunday afternoon.

Lol Google up masters attendance and ticket prices lol. 40k for 4 days with tickets between 1000 and 5000. People pay 1000 to watch the practice round and if you charged 50 bucks nobody would show at the classic lol.

This is true...however to be fair, I have never seen golf for 4 hours in the middle of a sunday afternoon....It puts me to sleep within the first 20 minutes. And by sleep I mean that deep, dead to the world, undisturbed, glorious and restful sleep after which you awaken in a small pond of drool and an imprint of the couch cushions on one cheek.

Good Fishing and God Bless
