Good morning sun-fisherman!

I had a great day wade fishing the San Gabriel in Georgetown this weekend. I've been wanting to wade up this section of the river since last year. I finally got all my wading gear in and it was an adventure. It was a mix of soft muddy bottom and lime stone. I probably waded about a mile up the river. Taking my time, I would stand still and let things calm down and then cast up river and work my casting down river. I found out where the majority of the bigger fish hang out.

The tackle selection today was my Daiwa Presso 4' ultralight rod paired with a Daiwa QZ750 and 2lb test. I had the line rigged for slip float action. I used a tiny fly-fishing strike indicator in lieu of a bobber, a "bb" sized split shot, and a number 4 Aberdeen hook. This setup was fantastic for mildly calm shallow water river fishing.

I caught no less than 70 plus fish this morning. The redbreast sunfish is the predominant species in this area. I also caught bluegill, redear, longear, and a couple of bass gills. I had a plain bellied water snake attack one of the redbreast sunfish as I was reeling it in. That sucker was hangry! He latched a hold of that thing and wasn't letting go. It tugged and tugged until the hook came out and then he moseyed on over to the bank and proceeded to gulp it down and then lay there and take a nap. This snake had no fear of me. He kept coming up to me and circling me within a few feet. I bet you dollar to donuts I could have hand fed this thing. All in all, a great day of fishing. I can't wait to explore other sections of this river.

The longear sunfish is just a beautiful, aquarium quality fish to me. Just look at this thing. How beautiful.

Side Note: I have not fished the San Gabriel in awhile. Need to make a trip sometime soon.

I'm going to try another section near my house in Taylor. I already waded the section from Granger WMA Gate 9 going north. I hit a big mud flat that turned me around.

My next trip will be to head north on 29 and enter the water at Mankins Crossing Bridge and see how far south I can get from there. I could go north from there but you need a boogie board or paddle board to get you past the deep part near the bridge.

I took a few of the fish home for the supper table. I was cleaning them and of course I was curious to know what they had been eating. These things were full of these beetles. Look at the iridescent green color. I have a small bug lure that matches this green. I think I'm going to take this lure with me next time and see if I can trick them into biting it.

I believe that's an invasive Japanese beetle.

I tell you what. The beetle must be prolific and plentiful because just about every fish had these in their bellies.

Fly rod with a green foam bomber. Lots of fun. I have never seen beds this late.
