Its a mostly lose/lose for everyone. Echoing most of what Jpurdue said:

Contrary to what I thought, alimony absolutely is an option in Texas-- after 10 years of marriage you are absolutely a candidate. In case you want to know how long that means you will be writing checks to the Xbox, go search "in perpetuity."

A simple divorce can cost as little as a couple grand. Mine was probably about 100k in lawyering. I have 50/50 custody and she is geofenced in a 12 mile radius. That cost me a lot, but I can make more money. I cannot replace time away from my child. Our split was ~54/46 her/me.

The happy ending is that my relationship with my kiddo is 10x what it was before and I would do it all over again.

Never ever say never ever, but cannot imagine remarrying. I'm more likely to get a tattoo on my forehead.

There is no good or fair divorce only the lawyers come out ahead and I wouldn't think of going without one.If kids ot a business is involved $ 3,500-$5,000 would be about right. If you go in front of a judge it could be more.

Wow this is not even close. A true non contested divorce with no property and no children averages about $1500 plus court costs. A true non contested divorce with property and no children may be slightly higher depending on what closing documents are necessary i.e. special warranty deed, deeds of trust, qualified order that divides retirement assets in accordance with the agreement etc. Again, slightly higher if truly non contested divorce with property and children. The final decree will be an additional 20 pages at least for the children provisions. If the parties have significant property and children and the issues are contested, "3500 -5000" will barely get you past the first temporary hearing.

The saying is "Love is grand, divorce is 100 grand"

And finally, whether agreed or not, you cannot be divorced until after 60 days has past since the date the petition for divorced was filed. The best advice I can give you is to schedule a consultation with a family law attorney, there are plenty out there that do free consultations, instead of relying on advice from members of a fishing forum.

You are welcome.

100!!!!! my uncontested Divorce is costing me so far, around 3k. And we're not done. She's "stalling", even though she isnt fighting for anything.

LOL. He says $1500ish and someone else says 3500-5000. What's the difference? I mean really, that's nothing in the grand scheme.

"Amicable divorce" = "Jumbo shrimp"

Just a story I have a cousin who has been married 7 times that I know of. She actually married the same guy 3 different times. I told her Mother , my Aunt that she needed to have her committed because she was nuts. Apparently her Mother told her what I said because I haven’t heard from her in several years.
