Sidescan distance question

The shortcut they give in youtube is to subtract depth from what you see on sidescan.
But is it really the Pythagorean theorem that is applicable here?
The distance I see on the sidescan is the true distance to the object.
If I know the depth of the object then the horizontal distance can be inferred using the Pythagorean theorem, right?
Asking because I am good with numbers so this is something I can do accurately enough in my head
Some people just like catching. I like fishing.

I use the the range scale on my Humminbird.
