Howdy, I'm headed to Galveston tomorrow and plan on trying the surf. I'm going to throw some plastics, topwaters, and corkies, and have some croaker on hand, maybe some live shrimp. I haven't been able to make it down there yet this year, but looks like conditions at the beach will be good, just a little steamy. We usually stay on the SLP side of the toll bridge, but this year we'll be at Jamaica Beach. Does anybody have advice on a good beach to try at daybreak around there? I know it gets crowded later in the morning, but I'll be done by 9 or 10. I could go back across the bridge to Follets, but was hoping for possibilities closer to JB. Thanks, and tight lines to all!!!!

That beach from section of beach is pretty homogenous. Find a spot with easy access and get there early. You have to get down close to SLP, or up to the start of the jetties around 61st street before you find a section of the beach that is not just like everywhere else.
Water clarity, surf conditions, tide movements, wind speed and direction will all play into your success. But you won't be able to tailor your trip the conditions, so just be ready to make the most of what you've got.

I saw in another group where they reported to throwing back 20 keeper specks after an easy limit this morning on the west end. Spooks and Soft plastics.

I have stayed on the canals in Jamaica beach for the last several years. If you have a house in/on the canals I would try the night fishing in the green dock lights. Throw a live shrimp on an un-weighted hook using a flourocarbon leader and you should be able to catch a nice mix of specks/sand trout. On the beach front shrimp in the second or third gut (look for the area where the waves aren't breaking) and you can throw live shrimp on as light of a weight as you can get away with, you will catch a mixed bag almost every cast. If you are searching for bull reds try a cut mullet cast out past the 3rd sandbar if possible and just wait (be ready for a shark with the cut mullet also).

Finally made it home, it was a great trip. Yep, they were in the surf everywhere I stopped on both sides of the pass. Seems like Freeport side had bigger size. Caught several specks each day, mostly on croaker. The toothy critters were out too, and they liked the shrimp. I don't enjoy getting the hook out of 14 or so of both blacktip/spinners when I'm wading out at what I call the 'deep bar'. I stuck with croaker and it paid off most of the time. Saturday was choppy, but the water was really clear. It stayed that way for the rest of my very enjoyable time spent there. I'm going to post my last limit before we packed up and checked out of the house. .
