We are all spoiled. I’m old enough to remember when all we had was Wal-Mart and Grandpa’s Cabelas catalog. I knew it by heart. I grew up in the Mid-Cities so we also had Smitty’s in Dallas and US Sports Sales in Hurst.

We were buying Abu 5000 combos at K-Mart. They had a great selection. Maybe better then a current Academy. roflmao

There was a tracker marine and bass pro tackle store off I 30 in Garland next the DPS years ago, it had a great worm bar and friendly employees that could actually assist you with your needs.

It's sad to see the big corp box stores move in and you know that some of the smaller independents will end up out of business because of it.

I am surprised BPS was allowed to buy Cabelas, it seems if it was any other industry there would have been some pressure to not allow one man to monopolize an industry.

He has also tried the same with the bass boat industry it seems.

Jobs are good, tax revenue (though doubtful he will pay much if any, abatements are a corp tool when wanting to open in an area) is good and convenience to those who like to shop at big box corp stores.

We bought most of ours at TC Halls on Jim Miller in the Grove.

BPS in Tyler, don’t get much better than that. That’s a positive in my book, saves me from driving to S’port or DFW.

It might be slightly closer to me. I live about an hour and fifteen minutes roughly from the Allen Cabelas and Garland BPS.

A good rule of angling philosophy is not to interfere with another fisherman's ways of being happy, unless you want to be hated.

OK, I’ll bite…..please name one brick & mortar store with a better overall selection.

It's about 5 minutes from my Office. I've been there on several lunch hours.
One screwed up thing there is that the fishing section if split in two halves. They did it for marketing so you have to walk thru a bunch of camping and clothing sections to see both sections of the tackle.

Yeah but in terms of soft plastics, it was stocked to the gills. Pretty good on hard baits too but I didn't peruse that much, I was looking at topwater.

I live 5 miles from Academy and about 12 from BPS….its faster to go to BPS, round trip, parking, waiting in line factored in.

I can't count the times I have gone in and grabbed a few items that I didn't really have to have, got in line and after 5 minutes of not moving just set it on self by register and walked out. And be for sure if the person in front of you actually decides to apply for a academy credit card when they ask you are doomed.

Don't even think returns go to Customer Service. Not anymore. You have to get in the same line as others checking out. PITA for sure.

Not a fan of Morris or BPS….and what he’s done with the boating industry and now, since the Cabelas buyout, to the sporting goods industry
Good luck selling this POS Nitro boats here anywhere near Lake Palestine….they will be good for about 3 trips, LOL

I’ll keep spending my money here locally at Porters and Creekside.

BPS clones all of their vendors baits with Chinese knock offs. They are the Wal Mart of sporting goods.

I am glad to see the building being used for something and it will hopefully make Academy get their stuff together. That place has been a [censored] show about the last year…..store seems to always be in disarray and dirty as hell- not sure if management has changed or it’s just that they have to hire any mouth breather you can get to fill out an application- post Covid, but they need some better help for sure.
