I’ve been fishing straight fluro when drop shotting. For you guys that use braid to fluro, are you using a fluoro leader material or just fluorocarbon line?
Thanks in advance.

You can do it either way. A lot of guys gripe about line twist when using straight fluro, if it works for you I wouldn’t switch.
If you’re getting twisted up, use braid and connect a leader with the knot of your choice.

I had some twist issues early on but have used a swivel to prevent that. Thinking about making a change because I’ve lost two good fish recently. I know a lot of guys use braid to fluro so my question was, for this setup do most use a fluro leader material or just plain fluro line.
I’ve been fine going straight fluro for some time, but it seems I’ve been using the DS a lot more often here of late so just want the best setup. Typically fishing this pretty shallow, 2-10’, no real timber just some rock. Don’t know if my line got nicked but lost a pretty good one today.
Appreciate the help.

I use a 6ft leader of 8lb fluorocarbon line. I tie a Palomar knot and leave about a 12-18 inch tag for the weight. Once you tie the Palomar knot, pull the tag end back through the top of the hook eye and pop the knot through to the underside of the hook. This will make the hook stand straight out to the side. When you nose hook your bait, it will float horizontally.

Appreciate the help. Are you braking off? If it is breaking, the only thing you can do is set the drag a little looser. If they are coming unhooked, try an Owner Mosquito hook, size #2, and it’s a reel set…smooth lift of the rod. The little mosquito hook, when rigged the way I said to rig it, will lock right into the top of the lip. They can’t throw the hook since it doesn’t allow leverage or weight to effect the hookset

yes, they broke off! Took a hard run and line snapped.
I currently use the mosquito light hook, I haven’t had many come unbuttoned.

Appreciate the help. Are you fishing around zebra mussels? If you are, braid might make your situation worse. I wouldn’t think going to braid will help with losing fish, but maybe it’s worth a try. I use 15-20 braid suffix 832, and I use an FG knot to about 15’ of fluro. I use Sunline sniper, usually 8. I used seaguar for many years, I am not impressed with seaguar small diameter lines. Sunline sniper is by far better. Just grab a spool of each. Pull on them, the seaguar brakes easy, you will be hard pressed to break the sniper. Sniper stretches slightly more, but I’d rather stretch than break. In fact, with braid, some stretch is good, you need some “give” I use about a 24” tag from my hook to weight. Sometimes you need to have your drag kind of “firm” while fishing, and then loosen it if you get a big one. I’m a big fan of back reeling, but that’s a lost yankee art…

Most of my spinning rod setups are 10lb braid to (8 or10lb) 100% flouro fishing line using an Alberto knot.. Just the flouro line I would spool up on a reel. I have many brands of flouro, some are decent and some are ok. You don't know how good a specific type of line is until you really abuse it in the field. Braid floats, and 100% flouro line sinks. For really clear water you should try it. You would be surprised at how many fish come up and look at the bait. I also have changed over to a different hook when using a drop shot. On my little lake which is rocky, I am using a gamagatsu octopus hook. You would be surprised that it's not always hung up. Tie it on and feed the tag line thru the eye of the hook which will attach to the weight. This little hook connects, and stays connected. In heaviee cover, If I want to still use the drop shot I will goto a tx rig hook with the tag line. I like the skinny drop shot weights when fishing dam rip rap. Doesn't get hung up so much. Test the Alberto knot well before you use it. Good luck
