Huge credit to the TPWD and the biologists from Athens for doing such a great job with the stocking and management of the Hybrid Striped Bass population here on Cedar Creek. I know there is many locals that would agree that Cedar Creek is fishing well with both Hybrids and Whitebass. One of the big reasons that this fishery is so successful with above average size fish is the management of catch and release by all of the local fisherman that love this lake. Granted there is time that a few are taken out but not huge limits and cooler fulls. I have made an effort to do the same and have tagged and released over 450 Hybrids back in the lake so far this year. The fishing has been consistent and limits of whitebass are very common. All fish are being caught on artificial baits. Here are some recent catches by clients.

Come on out and spend a morning with me !

Brent, what is the purpose(s) of tagging the hybrids, and what should a person do if they catch one with a tag? Also, do you have to get a permit from Texas Parks and Wildlife to tag a fish? Thanks, Dennis

Dennis,

No permit needed from TPWD to tag fish. If you catch a tagged fish you should weigh and measure it and record where you caught it . On the tag it has my name and number to call with the information. I tag these fish to find out more of how fast they grow, if they ever get caught again, where they travel to during the year etc. FYI I had a call from a guy who caught a tagged fish in March. This fish was caught in October of 2023 at Crappie Island He caught the tagged fish up in Kings Creek 20 miles North in Oak Grove by Kaufman. I want to understand this fish so I can help people catch more of them in the future..

Very cool marine biologist, Brent! Good questions, DC. If you see a mepps nose ring on the hibbie you can almost tell who caught it before? Lol

This is an awesome thing you’re doing! Just curious, have you ever caught any of your own tagged fish? Might make a trip that way soon, and have never been on the lake before….. but wife and I are looking at property’s, so this is fitting
