I'm waiting on a new MotorGuide Xi5 saltwater trolling motor. I wanted to get your opinion on mounting the trolling motor directly to the deck or using the quick release mounting bracket. I would appreciate any pros or cons from your experience with these two options.

Thanks....Richard

Get a quick release bracket. I had one on my bay boat. It had a molded in area for a conventional scissor type mount but the Xi5 base is much shorter and needs to hang over the bow further. You'll be lucky to get 2 mount bolts in let alone 4.

I went ahead and mounted the Xi5 directly to the deck where my old scissor mount went and only got two bolts in the back of the base on the port side but got 3 bolts on the other side, pretty well spread out. Where on the deck did you end up putting in the quick release mount?

The quick release bracket has the same footprint of the trolling motor so it would mount in the same place,

you can always add it later,
