I love crappie, sandbass and striper fishing but have only fished saltwater maybe twice. My family and I are going to Port A in June and I was planning on fishing off the Jetty. Trying to find out what range of fish I could expect so I can try to get up to date on size limits etc. Also so I can figure out what type of rod and reels to buy for the trip. Any info is greatly appreciated.

You can expect to catch redfish, but speckled trout fishiing is even better down there in June. Use live Kroker for bait, and a hook with no weight. Cast your live kroker out as far as you can. Let it sink to bottom. If no bites after 1 minute on bottom, lift your rod 2 feet and reel in the slack while the bait settles back down to bottom. Repeat until a trout hits it. Trout typically hit the bait one time to kill it, but they don't eat it on the initial strike. It is hard to not set the hook on the initial strike, but wait to set the hook until you feel them swimming off with your bait after they have eaten it.. Of course you may hook into a gafftop, flounder, or sheephead that time of year, but June is typically best for redfish and trout. You can throw a 1/2 oz chrome or gold kastmaster in the surf and catch whiting. You can always catch sharks at the end of the jetties using fresh mullet cut bait and a wire leader.

If you can get your hands on a kayak drop it in the water at a housing edition with canals. Many of the home owners keep a green fish light in the water behind their house. Paddle down the canals after dark and cast a 3" white swim bait or speck rig around those green lights to catch Trout.

Hopefully we're done with the big storm tides. Sure had the fish all messed up. Trout were in redfish areas, and redfish were scattered to who knows where.

The reds completely abandoned the sands down here; they're just now filtering back in. Finding them along the spoil islands again, but they won't eat crab or shrimp flies at all. Hoping Beryl doesn't start that up all over again; got a friend driving down next week to fish for a couple of days. The last trip he and I fished together, up in Port Aransas, got blown out by crazy high wind. Neither of us brought anything but fly rods. At least the water level's normal again.............

Appreciate it Pat. I'm 20 miles inland and 35' above sea level, and I doubt Beryl's going to be a major threat anyway. Just hoping she gives us some much-needed rain.
