Let's say it's a 10 out of 10 to your ears without the suppressor what is it with the suppressor? Of course it's all subjective but might help us suppressor newbs. Ultrasonic creates a sound when it breaks the sound barrier. A suppressor doesn't effect that sound. Subsonic, no sonic boom crack. What a suppressor does is cool the powder charge explosion before it leaves the barrel. Because, when hot air encounters the colder air outside the muzzle. It creates.. Well, thunder. The more baffles up to point will cool the charge enough. To where there is no, 'thunder'. However, you will still get sound from the bolt cycling on a semi auto. Clack Clank The most dead quite is a bolt action, subsonic ammo. You'll hear a psst noise. Being able to hear the bullet contact the target.

Oh, and here's a tip. Your first round will be the loudest. Because there's oxygen inside the suppressor.
Once that oxygen is burnt out after the first shot. The second shot will be drastically more quiet.

That'll work but if you're using bolt action. Heat the suppressor up. Propane torch or a BIC lighter. The goal is getting the oxygen out. Because during the first shot. The gases will feed on the oxygen. Making a bigger boom. No oxygen and the gases have less fuel to feed on. Lower sound. Suppressor are a fun item to have.

For reference, 140 dB is considered the threshold for pain. Anything louder than that hurts your ears and causes temporary ringing (or worse). A standard 22lr rifle shoots right at that 140 dB level. A 22lr pistol is 150+.
Lots of factors affect the total sound level of a suppressor. Materials, baffle design, length, width. The "fit" matters as well - many folks like to get a .30 caliber can so they can use it on multiple guns. A .30 caliber can on a .223 rifle lets a lot of gas out with the bullet so it is not nearly as quiet as a suppressor built specifically for the 223.
I have always used .30 caliber cans, and have shot them on anything from a 223 to a 30-06 to a 300 win mag. Even on the mag, every can I've used brought it down into the hearing safe decibel range.
When hunting or sighting in (on an outdoor range) I don't wear hearing protection when shooting suppressed. Now if I am plinking more than a few dozen rounds, or if I were to shoot full auto then I'd probably wear protection.

I got your back. Some things are off limits. Like oil filters and the adapter of such. Not on here.

Or just ear plugs? If you've got a suppressor and are shooting outside, I'd say just plugs are fine. And if you are shooting slowly, with 30 seconds or more between rounds then you may not even feel like you need it. My experience with a suppressor is it will make any caliber gun shoot more quietly than a 22 rifle.

The sound isn't where you are. It's a crack in open air. A suppressor will only do so much. Hollywood quite? it's gots to be a bolt action. 22 short. Or 308 loaded to 44magnum at 400 yards. Subsonic.

Getting into the NFA game can get out of hand quickly.
A lot of people are asking how quiet a gun is with a can. With supersonic ammo most guns border on the line of hearing safe with a decent suppressor and no hearing protection. With subsonic ammo I’d say they are almost all hearing safe. We don’t need hearing protection anymore to hunt. It’s pretty cool.
