 Drain Plug O Ring

What should I put on my boat drain plug O ring - it feels the cable is going to break before the plug seats?
Or any other suggestions are appreciated.

Plumbers silicone grease. You can get it at Lowe's.

Pull the o ring and wipe it down with the grease. It doesn't take much. As long as the ring is wet looking with silicone grease.

While you are at lowes they have a oring box,, take the old and get s few.

Pool store has it in small tubes perfect to throw in boat
