What’s the best hub oil to use for my boat trailer?

I switched to a hybrid oil. It starts out as a grease, then warms up to an oil.

Be safe,

Haven’t changed the hub oil since I’ve had the boat and not sure when or if previous owner ever did. Fixing to haul it to Lake Okeechobee and figured I should probably change it before hauling it that far

The Lucas is super thick and sticky, can buy it at you local NAPA. Be sure to use some permatex black high temp sealant when you re-install your hub caps and or drain plug, keeps water out. When you drain old hub oil and its milky it had water intrusion and you need to inspect your bearings, they may need replacing and your grease seals will definitely need to be replaced.

Oil bath hubs have largely stopped being used for marine application due to the fact they are prone to water intrusion, if your bearings/grease seals are shot you should consider swapping to regular grease hubs or the vault hybrid oil hubs if you want to go fancy.

I second this. On my last trailer eventually all the oil bath hubs failed.

What does this entail?

I have a Ranger Trailer with Cool Hubs and have been using Lucas Hub Oil with some success--but they all seem to start leaking after a year or so. Do you just knock the Cool Hub insert off and go back with something else that you hammer in or is there more to the rebuild?

Thanks in advance.

I think oil hubs are a waste of time, and are more prone to instant failure.

I think bearing buddies are great, small amount of pressure to help keep
Water out, makes good sense to me.

Just Google it. I have oil bath on my Champion trailer. The only problem I have had was the fill plugs freezing up on the brake axles. UFP/Dexter has quit making the hubs with the plugs. I have converted all but 1 hub to the clear bearing caps with the rubber plug. I had some issues initially with oil leaking out around the threads on the caps. I fixed that by using thread tape. I rolled the tape and wound it counter clockwise in the threads of the cap and then 2 more wraps at full width.

I have read the oil is good for 20k miles. More miles then I will ever put on a trailer.

You will need to completely remove the hub and bearings. Wipe them down then repack with grease, put em back together and hammer in a bearing buddy. Be careful not to over tighten and you will be good for thousands of miles!
