I would have put this in Fishing Report, but there is more to it than that.

After putting off our 2-night stay already two times due to weather, we had to "use it or lose it" this weekend. Due to heavy morning rains, we got a late start to the road on Friday. There was no one in our "Lady Bird" RV when we got there, so we unloaded our clothes, headed to the ramp and launched the boat. Weather was hot and humid with light winds. Fishing as not very good as we only caught 10 bass. There was a little schooling, but not enough to dedicate our time to. Had a great guacamole burger and sweet potato fries at the Roadhouse in Bastrop.

Saturday was not much better as far as fishing. Schooling seemed to be more active, but we didn't chase them. Tried crankbaits, shallow diving crankbaits, spinner baits and flukes. Just couldn't find the fish. Only wound up with 7. I don't know if the recent heavy rains have got the fish messed up or what. Dinner was some decent BBQ at Southside Market.

We got up at 6:15am Sunday morning, I went outside, and it was cloudy and very windy. I said to heck with it, laid down and slept for another hour. After getting up, a new friend was pulling his boat/trailer in and said fishing was not good. We decided to pack up and go home.

And now, the rest of the story.

Before we left home, I bought a tarp to cover up the boat. I secured (I thought) it with lots of bungee cords and we hit the road. About 10 miles down the road, I noticed that the tarp had come loose at the back end. When I found a place to pull over, I went to investigate. Good grief. The end of the tarp looked like it had been put through a shredder. Somehow it wrapped itself hundreds of times around my Wife's rods, breaking one of them. After I cut enough of it off of her rods, I undid all of the bungee cords, wadded it up and stuffed it in the Jeep. When we got to the lake, I had to cut the rest of bungee cords strands off of my Wife's rods with a pair of scissors.

The biggest thing about this weekend was the Airstream. Although everyone knows that Airstream is a top-of-the-line manufacturer, this model was just too small. I am not saying that I will never stay in another RV, it will just have to be bigger. I couldn't stand up in the shower. The mattress was one of the most uncomfortable things I have ever laid on. Even my Wife, who is 100% Polly Anna complained. I am looking for tonight's sleep in my own bed.

nice report Rayzor. I'm off the water from a surgery for a few more weeks. Bastrop is always pretty good to me. Did you fish any deeper structure? 15' - 25'? That's where I seem to find them most of the year once the spawn is over.

And if I remember correctly, those Airstreams are not cheap to rent. For how expensive they are, they should be way nicer and more comfortable. At least the food at Roadhouse and Southside was good!

Once the majority of the fish move out of the reeds/shallow grass after the spawn (and quite a few will be in there in low light conditions always), there are humps, points, a couple of old road beds, flats with trees in deeper water, and creek channels with trees (you KNOW what creek that is I'm sure). I find more on the end of points generally than the other areas mentioned. I'll generally start shallow in low light and move deeper as the sun gets up. Best I can tell ya. Since the hydrilla died off I just don't catch as many up shallow consistently. Drop shots, ned rigs, jigs, c rigs.

I originally scheduled the RV for April. I kept rescheduling it due to bad weather. I got the rental for half of the normal charge. They would not let me reschedule again because they are getting into the high-dollar summer rental times. Although the weather could have been better, fortunately it did not rain.

No, I did not fish any deep areas. My Wife was with me, so my techniques are limited. laugh

THE EEL GRASS DID NOT "DIE OFF." I DON'T CARE WHAT LCRA, TPWD, NORTHSHORE PARK, AND SAM GIDEON POWER PLANT SAY. IT WAS SPRAYED. IF ID HAD DIED OFF, IT WOULD HAVE DIED OFF EVERYWHERE, NOT JUST BASICALLY ON THE NORTH END. argue

BTW - they are pumping water into the lake. You can hear the water running at the culvert in the discharge. I really don't know why they are doing it this early, but it doesn't hurt my feeling.

I always wondered about renting one of those. We usually just get airbnb, but I would love to have an airstream at the beach, maybe around Matagorda. Thanks for the insight on that.
There's also a lot of areas missing grass on the South end, in a couple of places I used to count on for some action. The missing grass makes it more of a challenge for me, as I normally just throw plastics or swim baits. But with that comes experience which I can't put a price on. I'm going to see what happens out there later today. I'll post up something tomorrow if any luck.

I rented an RV once to go out on a dove hunt at my landowners place and all the hotels were booked. I will never do that again ! PIA and like Rayzor said, the shower in this one was terribly small.

The walls of an Airstream RV are curved, not vertical like most RVs. This arc at the roof line takes away from height in the shower. I am 6'-5', so I need height.

Yes, there are even places on the southside where the eel grass is gone.
