I was going to recommend somewhere on the Mississippi route. Drove the southern route once and never again. Sounds like you have driven through Hattiesburg. Do you know about going through Africa Town when you hit Mobile?

suggest you stay on outskirts of Mobile and go to Dreamland for some really good ribs….

I just went near Montgomery and back over the Memorial weekend. Meridian seemed okay enough to stay for one night. No traffic issues either on I-20

Suggesting that somebody coming from Texas should stop for BBQ somewhere that’s not Texas may be the dumbest advice that can be given.
