This is a Question i`ve been wanting to ask other 18 ft Fiberglass Boat owners when it comes to the windy conditions. Personally I don`t care to venture out in any wind conditions over 15mph but i`ve been told buy a buddy that i was just being a "S" word. roflmao He always says "you aint got no jon Boat here! You can handle 20" I think he just wants to go fishing. Anyway ,be that as it may or may not, that`s my threshold! So I ask you, my fellow TFFer`s am I just being a "S" word ?? & what`s your line of Demarcation when it comes to Windy Conditions?? hmmm

When I had my 18' Ranger going out in a 15mph wind was dependent #1 on what lake I was fishing, #2 wind direction, and #3 what kind of fishing I was doing, #4 launch ramp location. Texoma is a good example. I would not fish it in a north wind but a 15mph south wind did not stop me. I primarily fish open water so I now own a 22' CC. Tawakoni is same as Texoma. If fish are on the south end of lake a 15mph south wind is no problem. I will just change my preferred ramp and put in at the dam.

I ran my 18' champs in some really nasty water, Rayburn, Falcon, Amistad, Toledo, all you could see was water all around and sky straight up. Fun? Nope. You gotta be ready and setup to battle big waves, and it's a different set of rules to run in it.

I ran the same stuff in my 16' champ also, and it's actually a little easier when it gets really bad because the boat responds much quicker. Now that said, you have to be propped right, and you can't do it with a boat that can't make quick turns without blowing out.

Rule #1: Never take a big wave head on, you're always at an angle so it's not pushing you around, or worse stuffing you into the next wave.
Rule #2 stay smooth, and watch the two waves in front of you, so you don't get trapped.
Rule #3 stay in control, keep moving so you have the ability to anticipate or react when stuff moves.

Best way is to ride with a seasoned pilot and see what they do, or just go stuff a few waves and learn really quickly what not to do.

The size of the lake matters. I wouldn’t be out in anything much over a 2’ chop and a 15 mph wind in an 18’ boat. An 18’ CC is not that big relatively. There’s a massive jump in rough water handling when you jump up from the 18-20’ range to the 22-24’ range.

Had a 176 then a 184 Champ back in the early 90’s. Was young and fearless in them.

It really helps to learn from someone with their clue ticket punched.
One of the best drivers I've ever known was David Bradford, he took me out in his 168 Swift with a 235 and nitrous bottle. We went screaming across Braunig in that missile at 85+, boat wakes everywhere, all directions, brace myself for the impact, because he's not slowing down, not one bit. We went over those waves with barely a tickle, and did it again and again. Dude, I gotta know what the heck you're doing. We spent an hour just bashing waves in that little rocket, and like riding a bike, once you get it, you've got it.

I understood it completely.
What I was trying to explain, running in rough water is a driving skill, which can be learned.

If locking your arms and bashing waves is all you know, then that will limit you on when you go.

18' BassCat Eyra, 175 EFI. Boat is a great rough water boat, fast, nimble and dry. That being said if the weather forecast calls for anything over 10 mph, she stays on the trailer unless I'm on a trip like Falcon or somewhere that's several hours from home, even then 15mph is my limit. My nearly 68 yr. old body can no longer take the abuse.Got slammed on Rayburn a few years back, SE winds 25-35 ahead of a front and it took me 2 years to fully recover from that ride.

That`s all well and good but I don`t own a 168 Swift w/a 235hp Nitros Bottle, nor do I wish to zoom across any lake @ 85+,or even bash waves with my arms locked. The Question ,simple enough at least I thought so,was "How much is toooo much" WIND to keep most 18ft fiberglass boat owners off the lake.It was just a question. Congrats to you & your buddy with the speed boat & btw I think I navigate waves well enough.
