Has anybody ever done the math on raising chickens versus buying store eggs?

I don’t think chickens lay for too long.

Every vendor at our local farmer's market was sold out of eggs within an hour after opening this past weekend with prices ranging between $8-$10/dzn. Got to thinking about getting into the chicken/egg bidness as a side hustle and some very quick math proved the idea out to be not worth it even at those prices. LOL

Chickens are the cheapest critter to feed. We get about 50 eggs a week with 8-10 chickens and they only cost about $15 a month to feed.
They cost around $15-$20 a piece when you buy them at 6 months old.

If they are so cheap and easy why settle for inferior eggs?

Because raising them was my son’s hobby not mine. I have no interest in taking care of them. He hatched and raised several batches of quail before getting the chickens and enjoyed that as well but has lost interest some now

We have had laying hens a long time, old hens are not very good to eat. Hens will lay consistently for several years though I would say the eggs are probably not really cheaper than buying in the store. They are better, there is a notable taste difference to me. Between the chicken and the quail, we never run out of eggs, in fact we usually give 10 plus dozen away each month to family and church family.

See you on the lake and have a great day!

Fully convinced you could fry a turd and make it taste good.

Mucho difference in laying hens and meat hens.
Waste of time plucking a laying hen unless you’re starving
