Vehicle started and ran fine, parked it for a few hours and went to start it up and nothing. Checked fuses and swapped a relay to see if it was any of that, nada, changed starter, nothing. I can put the key in and turn it to run and then tap a screwdriver on the positive and negative terminals of the starter and it’ll start. I’m baffled. Any ideas?

Does that model have the external starter solenoid like the old Fords? Is that what you jumped to get it to start?

To be more exact. The 2005 has the key on the column. The switch is likely ok. There is a metal rod that goes down the column that pushes and pulls a plastic rack with copper contacts embossed on the rack and rack case. The start part of the rack is the furthest position down the rack. The metal rod slowly wears away the inside of the rack from years of cycling off-ignition-start-ignition-off. The switch likely is moving the same as it was when new, but the rack just isn’t sliding far enough to make good contact in the “start” position from wear.

Time for a new ignition rack assembly. Last time I changed one, it was a few plugs and a couple nuts. The one I changed had some adjustment in it, but not enough.

It’s about $70 for all the parts to replace the plastic parts and the rod

Is there more to replace than just that part you have a picture of? If not I can get a standard replacement online for about $30

There is a rod that goes from the key tumbler down to this part. It generally doesn’t wear out, but it might as well get replaced when you do this part.

Ok, makes sense. Is that typically a dealer only part?

Took less than an hour. Not a bad fix. Took just as long to run in to town and get the part as it did to fix it. If you can’t start it in park, but you can get it to start in neutral that’s how you know what it is.
