This is a heavy AJ set-up for pulling them off oil rigs. Ronnie, if you see this post, yes that's the AVET you sold me years ago. I think it was rigged with 200-pound hollow core Izorline. I was initially going to respool this line from the top end (meaning reversing the line on the spool), but am now thinking about dropping down to 80-pound braid and using it for wahoo and such, since I don't fish oil rigs near as much as I used to.

Whatchall think?

I use 80 on my Avet 30 2 Speed and have never needed more. But I have hooked a bluefin tuna yet. roflmao

Yep, that line was overkill for the reel. It came spooled with that when I bought it. I think I will use it a lot more with the 80 pound.

I recall an old rule of thumb from a California long-range captain - have braid that's twice as strong as your maximum drag. This was for pulling big yellowtail out of volcanic rocks.

Considering that the max drag you can get on typical big game reels is 50-60 lbs, then 200# braid is probably overkill. If you think you'll go after big AJ or grouper, maybe try using 120# braid so you'll have that little extra margin over 80#.

What braid are you going to use? I've used threadlock last time I respooled and I kind of like it.

I believe the maximum drag on that reel is 40 pounds. 50 or 60 would be plenty for wahoo, but that's up to you. I run hollow core 80 (with a 100+ yard 80# monofilament top shot) on my Avet 30 wide for land-based sharking.

My go to braid is Sufix 832. I ended up spooling with 80 pound, and will top it with 80 pound mono, then mono to a short wire leader if targeting toothy critters like wahoo.

Correction ... most of the braid I have is Sufix 832. Just noticed this was an older spool of Power Pro.
