What are you guys using for line when fishing a jighead and minnow set up on a spinning rig? Are you using straight 6 or 8 lb flouro or are you using braid with a 6 or 8 lb leader? If a leader, what length have you found to be best?
I have been trying straight 6-8 lb flouro but the line twist is driving me nuts. I am fighting line twist even with high quality reels (Shimano Stradics) as well as letting all of a new spool of line off in the water and trailing it behind the boat to get all of the memory and twist out. All it takes is a few casts and I am dealing with line twists again. I am thinking the only solution is to go all braid with a leader.
Curious what everyone else is doing. Thanks.

Line twist can be frustrating with a spinning rod.

What you are doing, letting the line out behind the boat can be helpful. A few other things that might help are;

1. Don’t reel to close the bail - use your hand to manually close it
2. Don’t fill your spool as full as you would on a baitcaster
3. Spray fluro with reel magic or some other similar line treatment to help reduce memory.

You probably are doing those things right.

use 832 in 15 pound down to 8 Sunline sniper.

I use an FG knot, and maybe there is 5 or 6 feet of leader. You may want a shorter leader depending on how big your knot is and how it runs through your rods guides.

I’ve also used a shorter leader and a very small swivel. Owner makes one that is tiny that I like. I make my leader about two feet, you just have to try your best not to reel the swivel through your tip top - it’s might not be good for it.
I like the swivel for other things I do with spinning rods - it helps cut down on line twist - jig/minnow doesn’t create noticeable line twist unless you’ve got it rigged weird and it’s rolling.

All good info. Thank you. I think I may be putting too much line on my reels. I will take some off and see what happens. I haven't had this problem until I started using the light lines. Heavier lines and lures don't seem to be as much of a problem. Thanks!

I just use 6 or 8 straight mono... No mixing, matching or extra knots... Depends on the time of the year... 6lb in the winter... 8lb after the spawn... Dan

10lb YGK SS112 braid to 8lb Daiwa Samurai leader with Shin Fukai knot.

This braid sinks and this knot is so much easier than an FG

I use 30lb Berkley X5 braid to 10lb Segaur Visix flouro leader. I use about 10' of leader attaching with a crazy alberto knot. I find that using lighter braid its subject to wind knots casting. I just got a new reel and put suffix 832 15lb braid on it and it was just awful. Either the twist was getting to or something...

20 lb braid to a 10 lb 2 foot copoly leader using the Lefty Kreh knot. You can tie it in 30 seconds and my leader has always broken before the knot.

Currently using 10# fluoro on a BFS setup for my tiny swimbaits. I need to go down to 8 or 6.

8lb braid with a 6 or 8lb fluoro leader about 8' with a FG knot. You will get a wind knot in the braid every once in a while but its 1000% better than straight fluoro or mono and the braid with last at least a year or more. Most of my braid is over 2 years old.

I use 7 lb Sunline Sniper Flouro on a tuned Daiwa Sol paired to a PointBlank Medium rod. This makes one stellar BFS rig. I've tried it on ML baitcaster, but it was too limber for me.

I only use a spinning reel for 3 applications. Wacky rig, drop shot, and light 1/8 oz or less TX rig. My set up stays the same with all three. That is 20 lb Power Pro, to a 5-6 foot leader of 12 lb FC Sniper. I can only recall one time that I've ever had a wind knot using this with well over 2,000 casts. That one was of course a direct cast into the wind using a 5" Yum Dinger. The dinger is one of the, it not the, lightest stick baits there are. The Creme stick bait might be lighter, but I've never weighed a Creme stick bait before. I do know they are awfully light too though. I'm pretty sure if I would have side arm casted that day I would have avoided the wind knot. Anyways, to answer your question I think if you go braid to fluoro/copolymer leader you will solve your wind knot issue. Good luck, and tight lines!

The easiest solution to spinning reel line twist is to switch your light tackle to a BFS reel. You instantly lose all the spinning reel issues and gain all the advantages of a bait caster. You can use straight fluorocarbon, and you can use line as light as you need for the situation.

Finding the proper rods is the biggest problem I've found with switching; I've just built them myself. I can't think of any other problem I've had, and it's so nice to no longer have to deal with line twist.

It’s funny watching and listening to folks from texas try to figure out a spinning reel smile
