How much do you think is costs Sam's and Costco to make one? My wife can't fathom they take a loss.

At our Sams the bundled (2) whole chickens are $1.49 a pound or about $16.
They may not take a loss on the cooked chickens but they sell them much cheaper than the uncooked ones.

The big dog and 20 Oz drink for $1.50 is also loss leader. It has been reported non members have been slipping into Costco to use the food court much to the dismay of paying members. You know who you are.

They take a loss on that product, but they make you walk all the way to the back of the store for a reason. They want you impulse buying any & everything on the way back there. There's a word for this kind of marketing, just can't think of it right now.

^^^^Loss leader, that's it.

I stopped buying them. They have become chewy, almost rubber like at times. Usually end up throwing most away.

I would think it would be better to cook and sale them, then have to toss them out because they are out of date. Yard bird doesn't last long and can't be refrozen.
HEB has them up front when you walk in.

Seems most places sell hot chickens these days most are near the front like Kroger, Walmart, Sprout’s…etc. That said I don’t think any of those places are $4.98.

I have never bought one of those roasted chickens at Costco that was great eating. They do use them as loss leaders just like most grocery operators have done for years. Put them at the back of the store and make everybody walk past everything in the store. Folks don't go there and just buy one chicken. We were doing this when I worked at Tom Thumb back in the 70s.

My dog loves those cheap, outdated, roto chickens!
